I have an emachines by Acer EL1300 PC. I was surprised to find when I finally looked in Help and Support that the information was branded as HP. Can anyone explain please? Also, can I upgrade to Windows 7 on this machine?

    Hello again!

You will need to increase your RAM, as 1GB is not really enough for Windows 7 - I'd suggest a bare minimum of 2GB. There's not much involved when upgrading memory. It is one of the easiest upgrades to perform on your PC, but it depends on how confident you feel on doing the task!

Download and run Crucial's scanner. This program will tell you everything you need to know about your computer's memory requirements, (EG, how much you can install) and will even make recommendations for you!

The link I've provided is for the UK site, but you can change it to where you live, by clicking on the flag in the top right corner.

However, if you'd rather not open up your PC, then ask at your local PC store, who will be able to perform this upgrade for you!

    Hi itforsenior

Never known an Acer to have help & support from HP before! What program were you using and what did you do to get help & support?

It may well be possible to run Windows 7 on this machine. Check out the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor from Microsoft. This program scans your system, and will advise if you can or cannot. You may need to make some slight changes (like upgrading RAM or removing or updating some programs), or it may work straight away. Just make sure you backup all your files/data before finally upgrading!

Thank you for response, I did not get any email advice of it. Re #1---xp home > Start menu > Help and Support, shows correct Product No. but incorrect Serial No. It does seem very odd, but I guess not worth worrying about.    RE #2----may need to upgrade memory, nominal 1GB but actual 896MB, is there much involved in this?
