Can anyone tell me how to get rid of hiberfil.sys.
I do not use Hibernate so I would like to get back the space.
When I delete it, it returnes on the next boot.
Thanks,
Joe

Open cmd with Admin rights ( right click "cmd" select Run as Admin), enter  powercfg -h off  (space between g and -, space between  h and off). HTH.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the reply.

powercfg -h off  (space between g and -, space between  h and off)

Is this behavior controlled by a startup command or is it in Services?

Can I access its command using MSCONFIG?

Is there a name for the process that caries out this process?

Also, If I should need to turn it back on, can I use the same command with "on"?

    Thanks

    Joe

    Hi,

    I tried it.

I booted from a flash drive and deleted the file.

Rebooted and the file came back.

It must be something to do with Acer Power Management.

It's a command line tool, you can not use MSCONFIG, yes, you  can switch on with "on" in place of "off".

Try in Power Options, change to never for plugged in and battery.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the reply.

My System does not work like that.

I have what's called "Acer Power Management".

I have selected Standby for "Close the Lid" and "Press the Sleep".

I have selected "Shut Down" for the Power Button.

this function is an option of WINDOWS, it has nothing to do with power management, ACER or otherwise. your power management configuration utility can tell the system when and under what conditions to use the function (AC/battery, sleep key, lid close, power button, idle for xxmin etc.).

the 'hiberfil.sys' file is used by the function to store the status and memory contents and then  the systems shuts off completely, on restart the file is loaded back to memory and you are back exactly where you were at shutdown.

when you use 'standby' the CPU and memory go to a low power state with all other devices off, but the unit continues to consume some power so if you are unplugged and come back a couple of days later your battery will be dead and all your open work will be lost.

another way to get rid of the hibernate function (inadvertently or otherwise) is if you use the 'free disk space' function in the control panel and check the 'eliminate hibernation files' option.

    I'm using XP SP3.

I don't think I have 'free disk space' function in the control panel.

I have "Disk Cleanup" but it does not have a choice the 'eliminate hibernation files' option.
