Hi All

I have been trying to put Windows 7 onto my aspire 7730 but it gives me that infamous error message that i am missing cd/dvd driver and wont let me progress. I have tried to use an optical disc and a usb stick but both get me the same message. i have tried the fix of moving the stick to another usb port but that doesnt work for me either. There is another possible fix that involves downloading a sata driver that i can browse for during instal but i dont know how to do that.

If anyone can help i would be very grateful as i am at my wits end.

Kind Regards

Bob

    here. http://www.w7forums.com/threads/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads.12325/

I downloaded the iso. Burned it to a disc.... when that didnt work, made a bootable stick.

Did you use the Microsoft usb-dvd tool to make the install stick?

ok... so i dont think the uefi stuff relates to me so i guess the checklist is complete. how would i get the relevent driver on the laptop so that i can browse it as in the video? Or is there another way out of this mess?

You don't have a UEFI bios. Just make sure the bootstick is the first in the bios boot order when you try to install. But first, download and try installing a virtual CD/DVD drive http://www.slysoft.com/en/virtual-clonedrive.html . Check device mgr to make sure it's there and working OK. Then try re-installing Win7.

OK. Thanks. I will give it a go. I can't believe that Microsoft bricked my laptop with an update.

Bricked? Are you saying that you can't even boot Vista now?

No luck Im afraid. Issue persists. The virtual drive was on and seen by device manager.

It was like that for a while. I guess not trtuly bricked as I could reset to factory with the rescue but its not very useable with just sp1 on.

    Might try these helpful tips.

    http://www.sevenforums.com/installation-setup/28712-tutorial-quick-reference-list-installing-windows-7-a.html

When I had to install a new OS on an Acer, I have to go in to BIOS, change boot order

to CD/DVD for 1st boot, then go into SATA CONTROLLER and change valve frpm

AHCI to IDE, hit F10, let it boot to 'click any key' to load files and let it do what

it needs to do. Once installed and all updates. service packs, etc are installed,

I use this tutotiak to load the drivers for AHCI and follow the prompts for loading

AHCI to function. There are other good tips avail.

Thanks n2gc. No joy though. Made no difference. I will look at the links that you posted for more answers.

OK. Back up a bit. What happens and/or error messages do you get when you try to SP Vista? Or does it just hang?

ok. Heres the full story. Laptop always worked fine. I've looked after it, kept registry clean and tidy, kept myself protected. all of a sudden i started to have some freezing issues with internet explorer which would result in the screen blanking and giving me the following error message."logon has failed to create the security options dialog failure - security options" my desktop would reapear but then the mouse pointer would just be a spinning circle, no access to anything,  and then the screen would eventually go blank again and give same message.

I tried a system restore but no matter how far i went back it made no difference. Thats when i first started looking for drivers for Windows 7 as i had always fancied doing it and figured that i might as well try. However, whilst looking around for all the drivers the computer became almost unuseable and so i went for the rescue disc option and put it back to factory settings which was Vista SP1. Nice and clean and working fine. used windows update to update the OS right up until it asked me to put on SP2. working very nicely... no issues. As soon as i put on SP2 problem comes straight back.

So... here i am... writing this on a laptop as up to date as i can possibly get it without it going belly up. Thought windows 7 would be my saviour but its not turning out that way.

OK, thanks. Just so I'm clear about this, was the machine running OK with Vista SP2 at an earlier time?

Hmm. How about going into MSCONFIG > Startup and looking for any strange programs

that may have an "unknown" across from them. Go to search and type in MSCONFIG.

A window will pop up and look for startup. Look for any strange programs. In fact

I usually uncheck ALL boxes save for anything Microsoft or a anti virus program

I know. You can and really should go to SERVICES > and check the box at the bottom

that states "Hide all Microsoft programs " then you'll be able to see what other programss

are running. You see ANYTHING you don't recongize, unclick the boxes. I do anyway

until I can figure out what's going on.

Click apply > ok and then restart. Let it boot up in safe mode after you

have downloaded this program to desktop, then once at desktop, run the

program and see if you have a rootkit/bootkit virus going on.

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/antirootkit/

After the cscan and or cleaning, you might run Microsoft's FIX IT and see

if the program detects any probs.

    http://support.microsoft.com/fixit/

Maybe you still have a boogyman going on. You can also run

    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html?filter[2]=Performance%20Maintenance

Just to make sure all is well. I can't see any hardware problem that might

cause this, it sounds more and more like a bug is still around even with a

reformat and reinstall of the orig OS.

You might have to pull the hard drive and connect it to another pc and

completly format the drive and just install a fresh copy of W7, but I would

try an extra hard drive that's empty and do it to that one first, install it in

the lappy make the CD/DVD the 1st boot option, make sure SATA CONTROLLER

is set to IDE, F10,  restart and see if the other drive will load the W7 OS and

boot to desktop. If it does, well then something is going on with your Acer

    hard drive.

It just doesn't make any sense that you can't load W7 unless your lappy can't

handle it. You can find out if it can by running this from Microsoft.

Just one thing more, now that you have Vista SP1 loaded and it's running, does

DEVICE MANAGER see the optical drive now ? Is it listed in BIOS when you first

go into BIOS and information is listed ?

No physical drive. It's now running this http://www.slysoft.com/en/virtual-clonedrive.html .
