Using T232HL with macbook pro laptop running windows 7

I have a macbookpro running Mavericks with VirtualBox VM 4.3.8. I have installed Windows 7 64 home Edition and have connected an Acer T232HL monitor via the DVI port. I have connected the USB3 cable as well to ensure that the touch data is being passed back.

I found some examples of people running Acer touch screens using a some sort of virtual machines and I thought VirtualBox would work because 4.3 is said to have "Multi-Touch" support. So far however, I have been unsuccessful and I am hoping someone here can help out. I know that Mavericks will not work with it but I thought Windows, once it had the right driver, would be able to handle it.

Here's my setup

In VirtualBox, USB Multi-Touch Tablet is activated and the VirtualBox Guest Additions have been installed. When I look at the Devices/USB Devices dropdown, I see the monitor is indicated as "Unknown Device 2149:2306 [1331]" but is greyed out.

In Windows, the monitor appears in the device manager with the name "Generic Non-PnP Monitor". This seems to be the VirtualBox Graphic Adapter driver. I downloaded the following window7 driver from the acer site

Two files

T232HL_HDMI_Win8 X64_Pass.hckx

T232HL_HDMI_Win8 X86_Pass.hckx

A Folder

"T232HL_Driver" containing a file T232HL

Although these files are not in driver format I am accustomed to, I followed the instructions written by WhateverMary in the message

http://community.acer.com/t5/Monitors/Win7-amp-T272HL-No-Pen-and-touch-available-for-this-display/m-p/38585#M645

and tried to unsuccessfully update the driver. Windows told me the driver was already up to date.

I am quite close to getting this to work because the monitor does recognize some interactivity. If I touch one finger to the screen, the mouse moves to the upper left corner. If I touch 5 fingers on the screen, I can get the pointer to follow my fingers around the screen. It also seems to recognize mousedown.

Lastly, I have tried the callibration in the Hardware and Sound / Tablet PC Settings and I cannot select the crosshairs so I have to exit out.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I dont know if this will work in your situation but you can try installing the hotfix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2618640. I know it states for dual screens but maybe in your case it will fix the calibration/setup tool. If not, then I can't think of anything that would help in your situation. Hopefully someone in the community can relate and help.

Thanks for getting back to me.

Unfortunately, that hotfix was not enough to solve the problem. In fact, I had already tried that hotfix previously but to no avail. The screen still cannot be callibrated and I still cannot install the driver.

Do you know if there are other virtual machine environments which would be more successful for using this touch screen in windows 7 on a mac host? Also, do you think that upgrading to window 8 would work? I'm only using windows 7 because the client I am developing for uses it.

FYI, I have also posted this question to Oracles virtualbox forum and will let you know if I hear anything back. I imagine that there are other virtual machine users who would really like to get this touchscreen to work for them.

    Thx again.

That is great that you took this to them as well because this is outside our normal support and I was taking a stab in the dark. I do know that the monitor is Windows 8 compatible and may work better in that environment. Please keep us informed with any feedback you get as that would be great information to have for the community.
