New AZ-605 incredibly slow

I have a new AZ-605-UR23 which is a really nice computer but is incredibly slow.  I have migrated from an older Pentium 3 Windows XP set up which was lightning fast. I must say upfront that my computer skills are minimal so feel free to correct any assumptions I might have made. My system arrived with windows 8.0 installed and I upgraded it to 8.1.  I did check the Acer website after finding out from a Belarc scan of my computer that I was missing 3 driver updates.  I downloaded them and will install them in a while.

The problem I have run into--I ran some software-- driverupdate.com [the site says it is a Microsoft certified partner so I assume it is reputible].  When I downloaded their software and ran it the result was that I have 13 drivers that are out of date.  Looking at the acer driver update site again there are only 3 updates [the ones I downloaded] for 8.1.  When I looked at the available updates for 8.0 the names of the drivers did not match the specific series listed at Acer; some of the manufacturers [Intel and Realtek] were the same but others [e.g., liteon, wistron, NVIDIA] were not on my list.

I called support and was told to download and install all those 8.0 drivers and my system would be fixed.  I kept pointing out that none of the names was the same but the answer  was the same.  Again--I am obviously not an expert but I do not want to make a mistake and have to backtrack something stupid.

thanks so much for any help

Again, I want to thank everyone for all their help!  My Acer has been downgraded to 8.0 and I am a happy camper.  I am still setting it up but should be finished today.

Just wanted to share something that may have impacted on the whole problem initially,  May I remind you all that I am not a techie and in case what I am about to say is incredibly stupid please do not laugh too loudly.

Yesterday I was checking pre-sets on 8.0 and discovered that the MS fixes are set to update automatically.  I thought that was the case as there was some sort of update that installed itself about 0300 Saturday morning.  Anyway, earlier I had checked somthing on the control panel "performance information and tools"  and generated a little report which I printed "more details about my computer" which rated my computer at a 3.9 out of 9.9. There was a date on this report was as of 13 June 2013.  I bought the computer the first week of December and received mid-December.  I assuming this date indicates when the sysytm was put together and is the computer's "birthday".

This prompted me to check the line on the update area which was something like update history.  The history showed I was MISSING 90 critical or important updates! When the computer was unpacked and physically set up I think I remember that I was prompted to immediately download 8.1 prior to continuing installing things.  A techie friend helped me set up and started the update and came back the next day to finish the rest of the install.

Bottom line -- 8.1 was installed over a system that was missing 90 updates to the previous version of a system it was upgrading.  An assumption on my part is that the missing updates would have been required for the 8.1 install to be effectively installed.  I did download/install the 90 updates on the current 8.0 system; it seems to be running even better than it did prior to the updates and it was really running well before.

Actually, the only reason I am posting this is in the offchance I am right and that was the problem this may help someone else out.  The solution offered by the forum members was right on--wish I had not dreaded doing it so much and stopped what I was doing and just downgraded.  8.0 seems really easy and everything is working well.

    Hi Daisypearl!

Your AZ-605 should be hugely quicker than your old Pentium 3 machine!

I have not heard of, or used driverupdate.com, so can't comment on their validity, but I'd be a little weary. The best way of getting the correct and latest drivers will be the manufacturers' websites, IE, Intel, AMD, Nvidia, Realtek etc. and of course, the Acer support site.

There MAY be a possibility that the 8.1 update has slowed your machine. Due to changes Microsoft made in 8.1, it is not fully compatible with all hardware. I'd backup all your data, and reinstall 8.0 from your recovery partition or media. Try it for a while to see if it improves matters.

If the machine is still slow, then call support again, tell them you've reinstalled, but it is slower than your old Pentium 3 PC. It may point to an underlying issue elsewhere.

Let us know how you get on!

Thanks for your time.  I found out how to check the status of all my drivers and activated automatic updates [besides the Microsoft updates which was already activated].  I went through the drivers one by one and used the option within the system to check online for each and every driver individually [even if it was the same item e.g., 4 USB hubs].  None of them needed updating; some of the dates on the drivers were the same 2006 dates listed as being outdated on driverupdate.com. I am not defending that utiliy, just sayinig they did give later dates for updates [as much as 5 or 6 years newer].

Am I right in assuming that the embedded program in 8.1 is valid?  I am sorry to be so whiny--it is just so frustrating to pay a lot of $$ for something you are not really sure you want in the first place but I felt that keeping my XP system was just asking for trouble sooner than later according to people much smarter than I.

The thought of having to do anything like messing with the system makes me shudder.  All this is way above my paygrade; I spent years learning to be proficient in XP and felt very comfortable with it.  Sorry, again, promised I would not whine about 8.1.  Guess I will start from scratch and trying to fix the problem--whatever it is.  I will give Acer support another chance but my initial experience was very unfaborable.

Again, thanks, and I appreciate your time and patience

You may also wish to try IObit's Driver Booster, which has had good reports and is a reputable company.

Hi--I am back again--sorry to keep bothering you all.  The computer is as slow as ever.  All the drivers are uptodate.  I bought the pro version of Advanced System Care [Iobit] which I had on my XP computer and used all the time to clean up things.  First time I ran it it did all its tests and found scads of things to clean up which it did--the computer still just drags.  I have disabled as much as I think possible on the start-up menu plus all the stuff that came o the computer, [bluetooth, etc, a lot of bells and whistles I have not used and probably won't].  I use Firefox and went to that forum, received some useful advice and reset it.  Nada--is there something I am missing out on the computer?  I do not have any idea where to go next.  I am going to get a for-hire IT guy over but really do hate to have to do that when I have spent a lot of money on this brand new computer that should be super fast.

Sorry about the whine--it is probably something in 8.1 that is eluding me.

    Hi Daisypearl

Did you try reverting back to Windows 8.0 ? As I've said earlier, 8.1 has been known to slow down a few machines. It's a bit of a pain to backup and reinstall Windows, but it might just do the trick.

If you contacted Acer support, one of the first things they would ask you would be "Have you reinstalled Windows"?

Is this what one expects now when you purchase a new computer and pay big bucks [for me]?  I have had 3 or 4 off-the-shelf computers over the last 15 years and have never had to do all this to make them usable.  I am NOT railing at you--I did not try your suggestion hoping I could come up with something else--I know what you said [in words] but have not a clue how to uninstall, reinstall, etc.  I did not even get system disks -- everything has been online.  It took something like 6 hours for the 8.1 upgrade to load right after I got it.  I assume there are instructions at the Acer site and will look into it but I guess I want to know WHY I have to do it?  Shouldn't this just be a matter of my moving files and installing the programs I use.?  I still have not loaded my genealogy databases for fear of something screwing them up.  This is probably not gonna happen but I do not Know!  I guess this is a rant/rave about 8.1 really.

If I had a time machine would NEVER buy a new computer, would have kept my wonderful older fast set up that was absolutely seamless.

    thanks for listening

    I understand your frustration, Daisy!

See here on how to reinstall back to Windows 8. It really is easy & straightforward - just make sure you've backed up all your data first.

By asking you to revert back to 8.0 (because of known problems with 8.1), I'm trying to ascertain the issue with your PC. Was it slow with 8.0 or only since you upgraded to 8.1? If it was only after the upgrade, then the 8.1 is the problem. If it was also slow with 8.0, then there may be an issue with the PC itself - but don't worry, it can be fixed under warranty if it is.

My hunch is with the 8.1 update.

But we need to find out for sure, so if you can, restore it back and use 8.0 for a few days. If it appears to be fast, then problem solved. If it is still slow, I will do what I can to solve your problem Smiley Happy

    Take Care!

My thanks to all of you for your help; with great sadness I concur with your solution and will have the reinstall done as well as the reload of all my programs, etc.  I apologize for being so stubborn and trying to work around it when you all first suggested it but I just did not want to face all that it will take to start over.  The clean reinstall is not the problem, it is just all the associated tasks with getting the computer going.

I accept responsibility for not realizing that a newer version of an operating system from the only game in town might not really work--if I were younger I would scrap it all and start anew with apple.

    Hi Daisy!

What you say is perfectly reasonable and the missing updates could contribute to your problems.

Thanks for posting back, and I'm glad you're finally happy!
