System crashes with bluescreen... best method to restore laptop (and sanity)

My S3 is crashing regularly, and randomly. Crashes at different things ie not always when the same thing happens.

So... is a system restore the obvious answer? And would 'Restore Operating System and Retain User Data' be worth doing? So basicall any data outside the user folder is deleted and a new OS installed... is this likely to fix the problem?

Or could there be another reason it's crashng so often. It's an S3 951. i5 processor, 240Gb SSD, 4Gb RAM, running Win7.

The crashing started a few months ago and it's now crashing several times a day.

There's also what appear to be some bugs in the system. The trackpad controls don't work unless I open the mouse control panel. The power saver mode kicks in when the power cable is removed, even though it's set not to. And will go into power save mode even after changing to balanced... the screen will dim of its own accord. So I wonder if a system restore will fix these as well.

And also the fact that the Windows updates keep failing... so all-in-all, a bit of a mess.

    Hi SanPedro

There could be any number of reasons for your BSoD's. You could turn off automatic restart, so when the PC blue screens, you can write down the Stop error number and Google it, or post it here.

Reinstalling is probably the best idea, but I would backup all data and do a complete restore of the factory operating system and not the one you mention. It's a pain, I know, but it is the very best way of fault finding!

If after you've reinstalled Windows (Updates, Programs & user files) the BSoD's still appear, then it may point to an hardware problem. Hopefully they will no longer appear, and your problem will be solved!

    OK... thanks.
It is a pain. I'm backing stuff up as I type this.
    Man... it takes aaaages.

It's probably the best option as I don't think it's been right from day one with the niggly bugs.

One thing you can do is to make sure that the Memory Dump is configured and then read the dump files for the blue screen error message.

Also, when the sytem Blue Screens it usually writes a message in the Windows event logs stating the Windows recovered form Bugcheck and the blue screen error. You can then search on this error message.
