Iconia W3-810 won't connect to WiFi

Have a Iconia W3-810. It sees my wifi but doesn't connect. It is a refurbished model and can connect to a wifi hotspot from my Iphone, but not my Uverse router. All my other devices have no problems. Not sure what to do next. I guess I could send it back a second time. Seems like there are a lot of connectivity issues with these tabs.

  • Have you configured your W3 WiFi to meet the requirements of your router?
Do you have the correct security settings and have you entered the security key correctly (if required) on you W3?

    Thank Alan,

Today I get "no networks" found -same proximity as yesterday. I also cannot turn "off" the WiFi in the PC settings. The only security settings that I know of are the security code and I entered that correctly (same as iphone, ipad, desktop).

Not sure exaclty what you mean about "Have you configured your W3 WiFi to meet the requirements of your router? and security settings." Where do I alter these? I believe in the "manually connect to a wireless network" area.

Perhaps you could help me with these settings? However, I don't think it will help if the network is "unavailable."

Hello, Have you had a chance to visit a public WIFI spot. I think this would test your receiving as far as finding a signal..

  • I am surprised you are not seeing many WiFi networks let alone your own.
I suggest you get closer to the router while you are configuring the settings.
    Anyway...
Your router will have a number of WiFi settings that your W3 needs to match.
I wouldn't meddle with the router settings but you will need to know what they are. It may be easier and safer to simply read the settings from your iPhone, or iPad etc.
The most likely configuration is your router is enabled as a DHCP server. This simply means that it will auto assign an IP address to your W3. Check that your W3 has the correct setting...

Control panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections

Right click your connection and select properties.
Scroll and highlight 'Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)'.
    Click 'Properties'.
Ensure 'Obtain an IP address automatically' is selected.

Now confirm that security settings match your router (or check they match iPad etc)...

Open a command prompt window and type:

netsh wlan show profiles "your WiFi name" key=clear

WiFi info should now be listed.

    Scroll down to 'Security settings'.

Check that the 'Authentication' method matches your router. e.g. WPA2-Personal
Check that the security key is shown as 'present' and that 'Key Content' parameter holds the correct key.

If the security settings are incorrect you can remove the connection and input the correct settings in the normal way (assuming it appears on your Networks list):

    netsh wlan delete profile name="yourwifinetwork"

(I should add that I don't use Windows 8 and consequently am not very familiar with. There may be any easier way than outlined above!)

Sounds promising Alan, however I am stuck at the very start. I cannot right click on my connection because I have none.

  • Ok, I could have put that better! Smiley Embarassed

You need to look at your network settings (not connections).

    Try this:

Open Charms and in search, start to type 'Control Panel'.
'Control Panel' will appear - click it.
On the upper left, click 'Change adapter settings'.

A window will open entitled 'Network Connections'. (It's not of course - it's your hardware!)
You should see your WiFi adapter - probably showing 'Not connected'.
Now you are at the 'Right click your connection and select properties' point in my earlier post.
    Continue from there...

Missing one line there Alan. From Control Panel you need to open 'Network and Sharing Center'. You can also right click on the network status icon (one of the icons at the righe end of the taskbar, near the clock). You might have to hit the arrow next to the status area if you are setup to display only a few icons.

Click on "Like" if you find my answer useful or click on "Yes" if it answers your question.
  • Billsey, you are quite right, thanks. (It's been a long day changing washing machine bearings!)

Oh sweet... Did you get it up to your ankles when the bearings went out? That's what I had last time (many, many years ago).

When I enter: netsh wlan show profiles "your WiFi name" key=clear"

It says "profile not found on the system." When I do this on a connected computer it displays the expected profile.

    I get stuck there...

OK when you run  netsh wlan show profiles do you get "There is no wireless interface on the system." ? If so then open Device Manager and look under Network Adapters. Is there aBroadcom WIFI listed ? If so did it install properly and what is the driver number ?

  • That suggests to me that it has never connected to your network.
    Try:

    netsh wlan show all

This will list all networks that have been discovered (at any time) and have a profile.

Check the listing for your network - perhaps it is misspelled.

Today at least it is seeing an available network. Yesterday it was not.

There is a Broadcom 802 WiFi and it says it is working.

Security settings track with WEP, security key present and Key Content has expected value (my password).

    Still not able to connect.

Thanks for hanging in there with meSmiley Happy

  • I assume it is your network that you are now seeing and that you have a reasonable connection.
As everything appears to be correct, I can only suggest that you delete the connection and recreate.

Given that Win8 is flaky, the problem may be in the OS. It is just possible that recreating the connection may provide a cure.

    Use the following to delete:

    netsh wlan delete profile name="yourwifinetwork"

"Security settings track with WEP, security key present and Key Content has expected value (my password)."

Does it keep asking for the passphrase ? WEP passphase is not the same as a password, it is specific to the router.
