V5-573G cannot create recovery media or restore from recovery partition

I got a new V5-573G, the one with the full HD IPS display, a few days ago.  I really like this notebook.

When I got it, I did the Windows 8.1 upgrade before making the recovery media.

Now when I go to make the recovery media, it won't let me check the "copy recovery partition" option, and then it fails saying some file is not found (but not which file).

Also, when I was having trouble with Windows 8.1 (which I solved finally), I tried booting with ALT-F11 and doing a system restore from the recovery patition.  But it failed saying the recovery partition wasn't found.

I have not touched anything with the partitions or filesystems.

After I got windows 8.1 working properly (had to uninstall the Intel HD Graphics driver that Microsoft installed during the upgrade to get sleep and brightness controls working again, and then I had to install the newest Nvidia drivers to solve a crashing problem), I booted an Ubuntu live USB stick and made an image backup of the hard drive.

I could see in parted that the recovery partion was still there.

So, my question is, am I out of luck becuase I upgraded to windows 8.1?

Or is there some other problem that could be solved and enable me to make recovery media and also use the recovery partion to re-install the system.

I would like to be able to restore the notebook to factory original condition if I were to sell it or give it away someday.
