Gateway ZX6970-UB31 beeps 4 times, will not boot...

The unit beeps 4 times when powered on, I get no picture, no boot, the light at the bottom remains on a a few minutes, then it restarts and goes through the same process. I've been told the problem is most likely a system timer failure, or a memory error in the first bank of memory.

I don't know how to test the system timer, and would appreciate some help (I took the CMOS battery out to no avail).

Regarding the memory, I opened the case and removed the 2gb chip from the first bank of memory (leaving the 4gb chip in the second bank). Well, not only did the conputer stop beeping, it won't boot - it powers on only briefly (maybe 3 seconds), then shuts off, doing this endlessly. There's definitely something going on with the second bank. So I alternated the two memory chips in/out the first bank but still get the 4 beeps.

I pray it is no the mobo. Does anyone have an idea or suggestions what may be going on?

Thanks!

Am I even suppose to post Gateway issues here? If not, please direct. Thanks.

  • This would likely indicate a problem with the motherboard timer (non operational). I suspect the RAM issues are a symptom of the timer failure.

You may be lucky and find a poor power connection is causing the problem. It has been known to stop the timer. Try removing and reseating all motherboard power cables.

Another possible cause can be the result of over tightening the motherboard fixings if it has been removed and refitted.
