I own an Aspire 3022WLMi   Windows XP 3 :- With " <windows root>\system32\hal,dll. " Problem.   I do have the Original Acer Recovery disks 1&2 also System Disk 1.  As an old chap with little knowledge of computers would I be able to correct this problem myself with help, or would it be prudent to take the laptop into a computer shop and get them to do this and upgrade to Windows 7 at the same time. (Total Cost approx £150.) I ask your advice as I dont know how complicated it would be to re-install the.  <windows root>\system32\hal,dll.  Sounds complicated to me.!! Thanks.

In my opinion, I don't think it is worth trying to upgrade this older machine to Win7. You'd have to add more memory up to a max of 2gb on your machine which is the minimum needed. I suggest trying to recover the WinXP operating system with the Acer disks that you have.

I don't know if I am confident enough to try to put the Recovery Disk in and try to recover , as I don't know many of the technical terms that might be used in the instructions when they are written on the screan.

Did you get any documentation with the recovery disks? Or perhaps are the instructions on the disk labels? They're usually fairly simple and straightforward. Usually, you insert a recovery disk, power on the machine and simply follow the directions. You may have to tell the machine to boot from the recovery disk instead of your internal hard drive by pressing F2 immediately after powering on. This brings up the bios menu in which you can tell the machine to boot from the recovery disk. But first see if you can simply insert the recovery disk and boot without getting into the bios.

In the meantime, you could also try to boot your machine into Windows XP safe mode to see if you get any additional messages that might shed more light on the problem. To do this, you power on the machine and press the F8 key --- you might have to keep pressing it after Acer logo appears. This should bring up a screen that shows different options for booting. Select safe mode and see what happens. Report back.

    Hi JackE,

Thank you for your Reply.  I did try your last paragraph first but of no avail, it didn't want anything to do with Windows, I did try various things in the Safe Mode, but still came up with the same result:=

     <windows root>\system32\hal,dll. Missing or Corrupt

In answer to your first Paragraph I have Three Disks that came with my Acer Aspire3022WLMi   :-

     "One is Disk 1 System (1)"    P/N: SD.A4606.001  (Bootable).

     "Second is Disk 1 of 2 Recovery (1)"    P/N: RD.A4601.002  English(XP Home).

     "Third is Disk 2 of 2 Recovery  (1)"      P/N: RD.A4601.002  English(XP Home).

The Instructions that came with the Disks and laptop were very limited for my old Brain, I did try following the instructions on the screen but got completely confused by all the instructions. Hopefully didn't make any extra problems. I'm writing this with my "Desk Top" It has "Windows 7" which I do  like.

Thanks again for all your help

                Cheers Denalotty

Hi again. If you don't have anything important on the computer hard drive, I think you should try the recovery disks again. However, this time look for an option that essentially offers to fully recover your system to factory fresh condition. You wil lose any programs or data that you stored on the machine since you got the computer but it should then be like a brand new machine. The full recovery option to factory fresh defaults and conditions is probably the least confusing of the recovery options. If you're still a bit intimidated by the options presented when you first insert the #1 recovery disk, you might want to post them here and we can try proceeding further to get you up and running again.
