Aspire S7-392 doesn't play sound through HDMI

Hello -

I have the Acer Aspire S7-392 and unlike my previous laptop, the HDMI out does deliver a display to my TV but it does not deliver the sound.  The sound continues on the laptops speaker.  This is an issue since I would like the sound to go with the display for movies.  I have updated the Audio driver to the latest Windows 8.1 Realtek Audio driver located in the Drivers page.  The driver was an update but did not fix the issue.

Additonal info:  Yes I have clicked on Playback Devices while the HDMI cable is plugged in and the only option is "Speakers" and no other option (unlike my last laptop that showed "Digital Output/HDMI")

Any help would be appreciated.

I have the same problem.  Also updated to most recent Win8.1 drivers for chipset and audio.  Followed suggested sequence of power off, plug in HDMI cable, power on S7, power on TV.  I get video but no audio.  In control panel | sound | playback, the only available device is speakers, no HDMI.

I personally think I have given adequate time given the Holidays (two weeks now) and I have yetto hear a response from anyone at Acer.

    Rather disappointing.....

I wouldn't be opposed to it (although this would be a windows 8 and not 8.1 driver), do you have a link for it since this is  a driver older than anything on Acer's support page?

    Hello All,

after half a day facing the same problem (after upgrading my new Aspire S7-392 to Win 8.1) i found a workaround. The problem is definitely located in the Intel graphics driver. With the Win 8.1 driver release from Acer (v10.18.10.3304) the problems occur as described. With unintalling the driver and letting Windows install the newest version the problem persists.

Problem in detail: In my case a reboot with connected display works, but after disconnecting and reconnecting the display, audio over HDMI isnt working any more (its enough to switch the output with the hotkeys from laptop display back to the HDMI display). The problem is located in the "Intel Display-Audio" device that can be found in device manager under audio, video, gamecontroller. After disconnecting the HDMI display the device is deactivated. When reconnecting the display the device cant properly reinitialized. What I got after reconnecting the display was a broken "High Definition Audio-Controller" under system devices. From this point only a reboot helps solving the problem. So far the observations I made...

My solution: I installed the Windows 8 release driver from Acer support side (this is version 9.18.10.3131). This is a pretty old version but is still working under Win 8.1. The only thing is to deselect the automatic WINSat check when ask during installation process. Because this throws an error message after reboot. With this driver version everything is working fine. According Realtek audio I  installed the latest Acer release for Win 8.1.

I'll hope thats will help other users, too. And hopefully Acer will release a new Intel VGA driver especially for Win 8.1 that wont have this issue.

    Regards, Harald

This worked for me.  There is a more recent generic Intel driver that I was about to try until I saw Harald's post.  This fix appears to break Silverlight on Firefox (necessary for Netflix, which was my target app), but IE/Netflix seems to work fine, so not a deal-breaker.

Intel driver I didn't try is here:

    Thanks, Harald.
