S7 191 Abnormal fan noise

I just got an S7 191 and noticed its right cooler randomly starts making a loud noise. It sounds as if something is touching the fan, a cable maybe. Though I couldn't identify what triggers it, I did rule out a relationship with cpu temperature (through  stress test). Lightly knocking over the cooler seems to reduce the noise.

Could this noise really be caused by something as simple as a misplaced piece? And how hard would it be to open the case, fix it and reassemble? (Since I bought it in the US and I live in Brazil, my warranty's not valid, so I was thinking of doing it myself, if it's not very hard or risky)

I opened the case and checked the fan, but couldn't find anything visibly wrong with it. The culprit is probably the rotor or something of the sort (know nothing about the subject).

I tried calling my local Acer assistance but they can't sell me the part, they can only evaluate the notebook and do the fix themselves. But I am not willing to wait some 1-2 weeks and pay for something this simple, I just need a replacement part so I can change it myself.

Also, is this intake fan really that essential? Would temperatures rises too quickly if I just removed it (while I can't find a replacement)?

    Tinkerer

I am sure if you google a term like acer apire s7-191 fan you might be able to find a replacement part.

    Are you past your warranty?

I have no warranty since I bought it abroad, and that international traveller warranty is supposedly not valid in Brazil. I'll try to order that part, but Acer says they can't just sell it to me, I'd have to leave my pc there too be checked and repaired, but that would take too long and I prefer to do it by myself.

I've been tinkering with the fan (maybe I shouldn't, I know, but I can't help it) and now it's not working, but I've been checking temps constantly and they haven't change at all if compared to before. Maybe the noisy fan wasn't cooling very well anyway.

I had a similar issue with fan noise on the S7-391.  It was in the fan rotor and Acer support was no help as to replacement parts.  I ordered a replacement fan on eBay and swapped it out myself.  It TOTALLY solved the problem.

Please note that while I am not familar with the S7-191, the 391's 2 fans are different sizes - a small and a large.  Please note this when ordering if 191 us similar.

The 191 is just the same. I'm having trouble with the larger fan, the intake one. Lucky you that you could rely on eBay, I can't find any S7 parts online in Brazil, I think this ultrabook series was never officially introduced here, so I'll need to get the part directly from Acer.

And now I'm also having a wifi issue. I simply can't turn it on, even though windows detects the card and sees nothing wrong with it. I've updated the driver (uninstall, reboot, instal, reboot) but still I can't toggle it on through Fn+Q. It does work on Linux though, so it's (thank god) a software issue.

Quite a mess Acer has done with this "premium" S7 series... My cheap 3+ year old LG netbook still works better than this.

I've just spent some half an hour trying to reason with Acer's Technical Support in Brazil but apparently all these robots can do is repeat the same stupid guideline over and over: that they cannot sell me a replacement part, the only thing that can be done is to send them the computer, pay for the repair (there's no ITW here) and wait weeks for the repeair to be done, despite the fact that it can be done in less than 5 minutes once you have the replacement part.

Is this idiotic policy Acer's official postition on this, or is it some idiossyncrasy of the Brazilian branch?

    Hey sjones,

Some quick questions.  My fan (or both) is clearly on its deathbed.  Did you find it hard to replace the fan?  Found both the 40mm and the 30mm online, but before I buy and install myself, I wanted to know if it was difficult or not.  I've replaced fans before, but is this one complicated.  Did you need to remove the heat sink for one (or both)?  Thanks.
