Acer chromebook and external storage

I just got the Acer Chromebook and seems to work just fine. Because I am a photographer and therefore deal with huge GBs of (photo) data, I had bought, earlier than the Chromebook, a Western Digital 1TB external storage device (My Passport). My plan was to take the (light-weight) Chromebook and the My Passport with me on photoshoots and download the SD card from the camera (through the Chromebook) => the external stoarage device (using the USB 3). When I tried this the ext. storage device (powered thru the USB) lit up all I got was an error message.
That's my problem: The Chromebook won't recognize the storage device.

Does anyone have a suggestion or work-around.

Thanks for any help

Thanks for your response. And for anyone with a similar problem: It works, i.e. The Western Digital external hard drive (My Passport) plugs directly (USB 3) into the Acer and I was able to down load photos directly from my SD card into MY Passport; and then access them through the Chromebook. The help to do this came from the Chromebook techs (to whom I am very grateful).
