Volume hotkeys and Search failing after Win 8.1 update

Hi all, originally posted this in another thread I thought was more general

Two new issues have come up after 8.1 update and updating all drivers---first my fn+volume (up/down arrow) hot keys don't work. All other fn+key combos do. I have read old posts about similar problems, but nothing seems to work.

Second, my search charm is failing for control panel items. E.g., if I use the search charm, or just start typing, I can launch files and apps that come up, but if I search for, say, Change User Account Control Settings, or Change System Volume (anything that Search finds with a setting icon or notification flag icon), it will show but I can't click on it. It goes nowhere.

Mostly I know where to track down any settings I need through the Control Panel, but it kind of defeats the purpose of a search function if you can't access that sort of stuff quickly.

Thanks in advance for any ideas and help,

Mike

What computer model do you have?

Can you also let us know specifically which updates/drivers you installed?

It is an S7-391. The drivers I installed were all those listed on the drivers page for this model under the Windows 8.1 64-bit page.

    Cheers

Hi! I have an Aspire M5-481PT, and this issue has occurred for me as well after upgrading to Windows 8.1. I've looked at numerous other sites, and everyone seems to think that reinstalling the Launch Manager is a cure-all for this issue, but it's not! I've tried installing the Launch Manager in compatibility mode for all previous versions of the software up until Windows XP, and that hasn't done anything. I've reinstalled the driver for my sound card, and tried using previous versions as well, to no avail. And now I'm back where I started: every single function key combination works, except the ones affecting volume (mute, volume up and down for fn+F8, fn+up, fn+down, respectively), and it's really annoying, especially while playing games fullscreen without any visible volume controls. Help? Pleaseplease. I have the most up-to-date drivers, except in cases where functionality or compatibility were hindered (as was the case with my ethernet and touchpad drivers). I would really prefer not to have to do a system refresh for an issue like this.

Hello everybody, I have the same problem (with the volume hotkeys).

First problem that appeared after update to Windows 8.1 was that my Broadcom NetLink Gigabit Ethernet adapter just stops working from time to time and it is not possible to restart it (the only option is hard reset of the whole laptop).I managed to fix it by uninstalling the driver (provided directly by Microsoft Update) and installing the one from Broadcom support websites.  BUT, right after it, my volume hotkeys stop working ==> in my case, the problem is caused by Ethernet adapter driver (I couldn't find the driver, that would fix my Ethernet Adapter problem and doesn't cause volume hotkeys problem at once).

So I would appreciate if somebody could provide source of working ethernet adapter driver (Win 8.1 x64 !!) that doesn't cause reported problem.

Also this should be a hint for everybody that have the same problem (with the volume hotkeys) -> try to change the ethernet adapter driver

    Hello,

has a solution been found for the volume control not working?  I have an Aspire M5-481PT and volume control not working.  All other Fn keys work fine.  I installed the latest version of Launch Manager and still no luck.

Join the crowd as I have had this issue right after 8.1 update. I went to Broadcom and downloaded the updated driver thinking that would help but nope. I have went into power management and unchecked ability to go to sleep no good. I have enabled and disabled many times over with no luck. Ethernet drops and then WiFi picks up. In order to reinable the driver i have to re diagnose and then that only last for a few minutes and drops and goes back to WiFi. Either Acer is dropping the ball or Broadcom has made hardware that conflicts with windows 8.1 with no fix insight. Please help it is very frustrating when i have 60Mb pipe via Ethernet and cannot keep a constant speed or connectivity-Pick up your Game Acer and Broacom
