Iconia W3 USB

So apparently the W3 doesn't come supplied with a micro usb dongle (thanks acer, hundreds of dollars and can't throw that in?)

Do I need any micro usb to female a adapter? Or do I need to find an OTG adapter? (and if this is the case, seems I'm doomed to have to order from an online retailer)

As long as it is not "charge only" ones here (have several) all seem to work. What I need is a Micro B to Mini B M/M, right now I need two adapters. This is worse than plumbing.

Was surprised Acer did not include one since it came with the W510. Then again my final cost for the W3 was $100 less than the W510. Android tabs have them included but they charge on 5v.

Be interesting to see how the W4 fares since it will have competition. May come down to who includes GPS.

I'd like to get a confirmation on this. The reason I'm not so sure is that I already attempted splicing a "micro usb b" to a "usb b" (for use with an external dvd-rom using it's own power supply), with no luck. Both donor cables had the 2 power lines and 2 data lines.

I've read some devices need the OTG that has a fifth pin shorted with another somewhere.

I bought non OTG cables off the bay and they all work fine.  All three micro to full size USB adapters were not listed as OTG.

Also, I had a full size USB keyboard (male plug) that I modded to a micro USB (male plug) with no issue.  That extra pin does not need to be grounded.  Hmm just a shot in the dark, maybe try to splice to a USB A female and then plug your DVD to that?  And make sure when you are splicing, the female full USB end has to have the pins "reversed" because it's a female end?  Just to be sure, you should ohm meter the micro USB end with the colored wires at the other end since not all USB cables adhere to the same color coding.............

    male end

    female end

Thanks guys. Looks like it was working after all, just the darn dvd-rom isn't supported by Windows 8 it seems. Switched an end to female usb and tested with a thumb drive, no probs.

Any retailers that might carry the adapter?  (United States)

Here is the first one that showed up on Amazon with my google search... $0.88 seems OK, unless they're really heavy on shipping. :-)
