W3 and Antivirus

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on an antivirus product to use on the Iconia W3s.  I've upgraded the OS to 8.1 Pro and am about to join the device to our domain.  Normally, I'd load Symantec Endpoint 12 onto a workstation but I'm concerned about the amount of processor power and memory needed for the program on this device.  I'd stick with the Microsoft Defender for antivirus but we generally don't allow users to run automatic updates on their machines.  With automatic updates turned off, there are no antivirus updates picked up.

Anyone have any suggestions??

I have Windows 8 and Avast seems to be working great. I tried free Panda Cloud Antivirus but my Iconia W3 performance dropped down drastically.

I've been using McAfee (currently 8.8) for years with no problems (plug). I do have it set to paranoid so must disable the access protection (different from the scanning) in order to do any update. Only time I notice it is if something else complains it can't update.

Windows 8, and 8.1, have a pretty decent anti-virus built in, no need to put another on. It's been renamed from Microsoft Security Essentials in Windows 7 back to Windows Defender in Windows 8 and 8.1, but has essentially the same functionality. I haven't used any of the third party packages since MSE was released... And haven't gotten bitten either. ;-)

If relying on Windows Firewall and Defender may I suggest adding EMET to the mix ? It is free from Microsoft and just adds a little more protection.

Hi, before I installed mine I have googled if windows defender is an antivirus and it gave me negative answer, but perhaps I googled some old articules from before win 8. If that's the case I cant see the point of using another one. Thanks

EMET can be handy, but mostly for IT professionals. It's not a very friendly application for the typical end user...
