Unexpected shutdown

I have a desktop model AX3812 bought Dec. 2009. The computer automatically shuts down when unused for a while then starts up when needed. (Normal). Lately it has started doing this when being used. Just b4 it happens the sound of computer drops in tone, the screen turns off with a messge "no input" and nothing can be done except to disconnect the power lead, wait a bit then re-connect, when it behaves normally until the next time, which is more and more frequent. Can anyone help please? Peter Stacey

    Hi Peter!

It sounds as if your computer is overheating. Remove the side, power up your PC to make sure all fans are spinning. If there is a fan that isn't, check that the cable for that fan hasn't worked loose. If all cables are OK, but there is a dead fan then that will need replacing.

One of the most common causes of overheating is dust build up. It can be easily remedied by using a can of compressed air, which you can buy from your local PC store.

See here for a step by step guide to clean it. If you're not confidant to do this yourself, your local store can do this for you.

    Hello Finlux

Thanks very much for your help! I opened the computer and removed quite a build up of dust (4 years). It was obvious that this had impeded air flow and I hope was the cause of my problem. Since then the computer has performed well and has not shutdown when in use. The only odd thing that occurs is that when re-starting from standby (after 10 minutes of no use) sometimes (but not always) the monitor remains blank. Switching off the monitor and then on solves this. Do you have any idea why this happens?

Once again, thanks for your help which is appreciated very much!

    Hi Pete

I'm glad your initial problem is now solved! As for your other problem - I've not heard of that one before! I know some motherboards behave differently when sleep/hibernate/standby is used. I can only presume that once the computer wakes up, that it is not sending the signal to the monitor.

Try updating your graphics driver to see if that helps.  It may be the monitor, see if you can use another monitor just to test it. If the problem prevails then you may have to keep switching off then on the monitor, or to shut down fully.
