Graphics Problem after Windows 8.1 Upgrade

Hello,

I recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 and have noticed a couple of problems I can't seem to rectify. My computer is an Acer Aspire R7-571. I have an Intel(R) HD graphics 4000 card which is not operational after the upgrade (device manager shows an error message with "code 43" under device status). Features such as changing resolution are not available so, as a result, I cannot use a VGA adapter for video projection. I have followed the suggestion from other posts (as this seems to be common with many after the upgrade) to replace the driver from 10.18.10.3304 to 10.18.10.3316 to no avail. Most recent driver was the latest from Acer's support website. I obtained the original driver that came pre-installed when I bought the machine but get a message upon trying to install it that my computer no longer meets the minimum hardware requirements (strange since no related hardware has been changed with the upgrade). I have also tried numerous times to uninstall and re-install the driver with no success. There is no mention of a fix on Acer's, Intel's or Microsoft's websites that seem to work, if available at all. I have also noticed that there is no sleep mode option available under power option and, instead, my computer can only be powered off or enter hibernation mode. Another post from someone with this similar problem suggested the possibility that the 2 are related. Anyone have any suggestions? Could this be a firmware and/or BIOS problem? If more information is needed, let me know.

Thanks,
DG

Hi, I have the same problem with my w700p. There’s is a discussion ongoing in Intel forums and it is a problem with the drivers. Meanwhile I installed the latest video drivers for windows 8 (not 8.1) version 9.18.10.3257 and they are working fine not optimal but at least all the features are working without issues until Intel get the drivers fixed.

Welcome aboard to both of you. Windows 8.1 is a complete operating system, and when you installed it, you deleted all of your Acer drivers. You are now running on generic drivers.

It might be possible for you to restore your machine to factory settings, but you might have deleted your hidden partition when you installed 8.1. Downloading the correct Acer drivers for your Windows 8 system ought to help, simply because the two operating systems are so similar.

    Hi Vince.

Thanks for the welcome! What you are explaining is a situation that could happen but at least in my case is a malfunctioning Intel driver. I reinstalled the latest drivers from Intel to show you what happens, and is the same with the drivers from Acer for Win 8.1.

For now the older driver’s works better. If you have any clue on how this could be fixed let us know!

Thanks, much, Koller. I just finished with your suggestion and have everything back! I'm assuming that sooner or later a patch will be made for 8.1 but in the meantime, it's good to have the functionality back. Thanks, again!

    HD4000

In my case I'm using the latest version drivers for HD 4000, I'm running Windows 8.1 Pro. The OS doesn't come pre-installed I bought a copy from the Microsoft Store.

I'm running an R7-571 about a month old and updated to windows 8.1 without issue.
I havent messed with any of the drivers, unless I updated them at some point through windows update... I can't remember.

It's strange that I've read reports of so many issues with 8.1 on the R7-571. You would think that if we are running the same hardware, any issues like that would impact all users.

Ades, it sometimes makes a difference the order you install programs in. And the programs and settings you already have also make a difference. And while we're trying to help, you do realize that if you change your operating system, you void your warranty, and any problems you have are Microsoft's fault.

Changing your operating system does NOT void your warranty.

Please understand that Acer may not be able to help you with an operating system that we do not ship.

Upgrading to Windows 8.1 through the Windows Store on a system shipped with Windows 8 is perfectly fine.

You are not installing a different OS, just updating/upgrading the one we shipped.

Again, your warranty will NOT be voided for installing your choice of operating system.

Vince, I'm afraid you misunderstood my comment. I was trying to provide constructive feedback in that not every R7 owner is having issues with the 8.1 UPDATE. (8.1 is more of a service pack than an new OS ...It's a free update) it is not completely hopeless because there are some of us who have updated with no issue at all.

Furthermore, I did not understand the comment about the OS not coming preinstalled and having to purchase it. Was that in reference to the pro pack, or 8.1?
I purchased the pro pack online and updated to pro without having to wipe my install, then I updated to 8.1 for free without issue.

I've found that installing the old Windows 7 drivers actually work out very well for VGA, assuming of course the Windows 8 drivers fail on install. Something I've seen more than a few times since the 8.1 release.

I have a 4 year old Acer Aspire 4810TG.  I has performed flawlessly and has been upgraded from Win 7 to Win 8 to Win 8.1.

Since upgrading to Win 8.1, it has NO VIDEO when connected to the AC Power Supply but works fine on Battery.  I have tried several AC Power Supplies and the problem is issolated to the PC itself.

I suspected it to be a driver issue and have reinstalled the drivers without success.

    Any other thoughts or advice.

Thanks to all and Happy Thanksgiving.

No problem, Aded. The order in which you install software sometimes makes a difference. Other software you have installed might clash with your hardware or other programs. Some people do upgrade their operating system on a laptop with no problems. Some have a few problems. And some foul up everything.

I found A not necessarily THE solution on my own.

I went into the BIOS and changed the video from SWITCHABLE to DISCRETE and rebooted.

The ACER 4820TG now works perfectly.

    Hope this helps my colleagues.

    Best regards and thanks,

    Michael
