Help. My hard drive died. I ordered new disks from acer. After the install. windows update or the trouble shooter would not work. Do I need to do anything to the hard drive first?

acer aspire M5811, windows 7, Basically the same hard drive as what came out of the computer. Same size and speed.

Any ideas??

Thanks.

    Hi rz

If your computer is more than a couple of years old (usually pre Windows 7 SP1) it would have had the old standard 512 byte sector HD inside. Since 2010/11 the new standard of HD is the 4K sector advanced format. I had the same problem when I upgraded my HD.

Marrying up the old with the new can cause problems with Windows (Win 7pre SP1) and below. The solution is to check your chipset manufacturers website  (Intel or AMD) for an update. This will solve your problem.

Thanks for the info. Yes, my version of windows is pre sp1. I did try to update the chipset with Intel and AMD and came up with a .net framework error. It said I needed V4.0, yet would not allow it to install. I tried the V.3 redistibutable and that would also not install. I did have a tech guy try to do the new install off of a recovery disk set from acer. He said the disks must be corrupt. I have a new set of disks coming this week. Hopefully this works.
