W510 - installing Bios 2.0 fails -

Hi there,

in preparation for upgrading to Windows 8.1, I've downloaded the 2.00 version of the BIOS.

Running setup produces this error:

This device is neither WT3 or Cheetah?

Tried the download twice now, so this really seems something with the package.

Anybody know what's up?

Where did you get BIOS 2.0? All I see is BIOS 2.12 (for windows 8) and 3.00 (for windows 8.1)

If you go to the W510 downloads page and select the BIOS tab, you will find a 2.00 version of the BIOS (dated 2013/10/25).

The 2.12 you mention is the version of the driver package.

I have Bios v1.04 6/28/13 on the W3 and  1.0c 8/10/12 on the W510 and they are running 8.1 with no problem.

Personally am never in a hurry to update firware unless something doesn't work.

Have suggested to Acer that they provide a meningful readme with version, changes, reason, and checksum with distros.

You are correct, rainyday. I was looking at the driver packages. I’m running BIOS 1.93 on my W510 and don’t plan to change.

Acer is appalling when it comes to update narrative. Other companies give you reasons for the updates (what the problems were or what the update changes).

Understood, but the Acer Windows 8.1 upgrade instructions themselves start with an explicit recommendation to upgrade to the latest BIOS.

And considering the various threads with 8.1 issues, I thought it best to follow the recommended path...
