8.1 update fails w error 80070005 on Acer W510 hybrid w dock station

tried 8.1 update 10 times since Thursday.

8.1 update always terminates in "Gathering Info" stage with error code 80070005 couldn't be installed message.

have run dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth and sfc /scannow to completion with no problems

have run virus scans and malwarebytes with no threats found

have run October malicious software removal tool with no infections found

still under warranty here. Acer phone support said only fix is complete restore to original condition with nothing else

installed (no third party apps) on Thursday. My feeling is I will invoke warranty if that's the only answer and make Acer do this.

Microsoft phone support won't touch Acer tablets and seems to think this is an RT device with ARM processor. Has Intel Atom Z2760 and 2 GB RAM and is running full Windows 8.0 fully updated as far as I can tell.

Not real happy with Acer or Microsoft at this point. Is there any help out here for installing 8.1 update on this device?

Thanks.

ok, just do a system restore back to winows 8.  you will need to use a usb keyboard and mouse attached via mini usb on tablet, as dock station has no drivers under the restore, nor any touch interface.

so do the rollback and once back into windows 8 you need to disable, your firewall, any antivirus you may be using and windows defender, turn all of these products off and then you can run the 8.1 update again with no issue.

once 8.1 boots follow the onscreen instructions to log into your account etc.

Remember to restart your windows defender and firewall.

you will also need to run windows update again so you can install the new intel graphics drivers.

now your product should be working fully.

    Thank you for your suggestion.

Feeling pretty hostile towards MS, whose products

I have been purchasing since 1980s, for putting out

such a poor update, and then having phone support

DECLINE to support their software on any tablet

except Surface, especially since MS Store sold the

tablet and dock station to me.

Thoroughly disgusted with Acer for putting out a tablet

last November 2012 and watching a year's worth of

PREVIEW versions by MS of 8.1, and then saying scrub

Your tablet yourself to get the update to 8.1 OS.

As a consumer, personally outraged that a 450 to 550

Tablet hybrid would be outmoded piece of junk one year

Later and strongly believe Acer has the responsibility to

Develop the solution without essentially reformatting the

Hard drive and reloading all files and apps by consumers.

Acer is the OEM designer here. Acer has the expertise. FIX

    UPDATE 8.1

Apologize for harsh viewpoint that this is Acer's problem to fix, but I strongly feel it is. Now accidentally have tripped solution button here and can't remove it. Acer needs to develop another solution for this W510 Windows 8.1 update problem on their OEM version of Windows 8

Well, at least I figured out how to revoke the solution button.

Now is there any new idea on Acer's part as to how to update

    The W510 to Windows 8.1?

    P.s. I don't have a USB keyboard and mouse. That's why I spent

$150 on a dock. Would Acer care to supply such to W510 owners?

This is certainly a problem within Acer's expertise, I believe, drivers

For the docking station, as well as finding a solution to the W510 update

    To 8.1

Do you mean you were trying to update from 8.1 preview to 8.1 released ? If so I suspect it had the wrong activation key (8.1 preview had its own key).

I updated my W510-32GB to 8.1 on Sunday and other than taking about 2 hours it all went fine.

You may need to revert to the as delivered Windows 8 install using the BIOS key before you can upgrade.

    Thanks, Padgett, for your suggestion.

One, I only mention one update failure, 8 and attempting to install 8.1 update.

That's the update that fails on the W510.

Secondly, I don't believe I have ever seen a Windows update where the consumer

had to scrub the hard drive and restore to factory condition before updating unless

I missed something in the history of Windows updates from 3.1 on. Acer as the designer

and WWindows as the OS provider should work out this solution. I am surely not the

Only W510 owner with this problem. Just Google the problem and I believe you will

Find others. Perhaps if you never used the tablet or updated it or installed any apps you

    Won't have the same trouble.

I would think others with similar update problems may want to consider other action if

Acer and MS continue to not provide help.
