Once you have updated 8.1, you WILL need new Bluetooth driver in order for your devices to work smoothly. Since Acer has not updated their drivers for 8.1, here is the location for the Qualcomm Windows 8.1 drivers. The latest Windows 8.1 Bluetooth driver is 8.0.1.305 and the latest WiFi driver is 10.0.0.268.

As to the graphics driver, you will need to download and reinstall the current Windows 8 graphic driver from Acer. If you use the generic Intel driver, you WILL lose the ability to change brightness and may possibly have other functions not work as they should. So for the graphics driver, stick with the originl Acer graphics driver. Hopefully Acer will have updated Windows 8.1 drivers for the W700 soon, because many components will likely need updates.

The previous post was based on my experience with the preview version. Just updated to the Official release and it turns out that the drivers provided by Windows 8.1 (Display - 10.18.10.3316, WiFi - 3.0.1.155) works perfecly fine. I still however had to manually install the latest Qualcomm Bluetooth driver for it to work as it should (8.0.1.305), otherwise Bluetooth Audio Device would not work.

ACERs software support is awful! Some weeks ago when I got my hands on the RTM build of Windows 8.1, I made a clean install! Deleted all partitions and let the W8.1 Setup do them. After that I installed ONLY the missing drivers! W8.1 have integrated drivers for the WiFi, Bluetooth and some other things. The difference in the WiFi driver performance is staggering! No disconnects, stable speeds even at two bars signal.... The only things that have to be installed are the Intel drivers, VGA (although Windows Update finds one), DPTF and Management Engine.

Just for the sake of it I did a little experiment last night. I restored my tablet to the Factory W8.0 (had made a USB drive when I got my W700P) and after some updates it was ready for an Official W8.1 upgrade. I did the upgrade and downloaded all the W8.1 drivers from ACERs web site (there are W8.1 drivers now) and after proper installation of all the drivers the system was.... Awful!!! Lags, WiFi problems, Metro programs crashing some times.... The system was not stable at all. So I did a clean install of W8.1 again and installed again ONLY the missing Intel drivers, and everything (inc. WiFi) is perfect!

I can validate the solution that OrionBG described, that a clean install of Windows 8.1 solves all the problems that people are seeing after the 8.1 upgrade.  I have a W700 (not a W700P) and it was exhibiting the exact same issues that everyone else was describing so I reinstalled a stock 8.1 and everything works perfect, although took a different path to get there. I used the built-in Windows "Refresh" function found under Settings Charm->Change PC Settings->Update and Recovery->Recovery->Refresh your PC without affecting your files. This option will re-load the entire OS but save your personal files, settings, and Windows Store apps. It will delete any desktop apps that you have installed but it does give you nice list afterwards of what it erased to help you with the reinstallation.

I found that the Refresh function will not let you downgrade but only refresh the version of the OS that is currently installed.  So you will need a copy of Windows 8.1 ISO to do the refresh.  You don't need to enter a new W8.1 key since you already have a valid license with your W8.0->W8.1 upgrade so borrowing a friend's 8.1 disk is perfectly legal.  After the refresh, I loaded all the drivers from the Acer web site listed for 8.1 except the VGA driver as it wouldn't let me install (said my hardware didn't meet the requirements????).  Everything now works perfectly!

Can you do that too with a iso image ? or do you need to have the CD in a usb drive ?

  • grc100
grc100 Member Posts: 2 New User

You use the Windows 8.1 ISO to create a Windows 8.1 DVD (or USB flash drive I assume), from which you can do the Refresh with.  There is now a way to download a Windows 8.1 ISO file from Microsoft with a Windows 8.0 key, just Google this and you can find out how.

You can't do an install of the Windows 8.1 OS with a Windows 8.0 key, which doesn't make sense since it's a free upgrade, but with the Refresh method you don't need a key, only the disk.

The guy with the power settings is spot on.

Control Panel>Power settings>Advanced Settings>Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Settings and disable the low power setting for both battery and Plugged In

STILL PROBLEMS with HD 4000 installed driver provided on acer download and yellow exclamation mark appears in device manager .. there is no way to fix it only to install old 8 version 9.x.x. but then DXdiag shows that directDraw is NOT AVAil.

direct 3d is enabled and agp texture acceleration is NOT avail. so I dont know what the HELL is GOING ON !!

When I had Win 8 all 3 were enabled !!!

How to enable in WIn 8.1 ?

I either downloaded it from the Acer site or from the Intel site... I didn't keep it long after it was working.

It looks like the latest on the Intel site is the same as mine.

I had this problem.  Found that MEMS Enhancement Utility was the culprit.

    To disable it:

    Open Task Scheduler

    Click Task scheduler library

Right-click on MEMS_Schedule and disable it.

    Restart
