Hi.

My laptop has 2 slots for 2X 2GB RAM. All the information I could find said that I could upgrade to 1X 8GB RAM. The 8GB RAM I bought are supposed to be compatible with my laptop, but I keep getting a error message. I have been trying to find a solution, but most of the instructions are to difficult to follow. My laptop runs on Linux Mint-Cinnamon.

Updating BIOS via a non-official method is non-trivial, but I believe it is possible, although I have never yet seen it work for Acer laptops. Acer laptops are not designed for Linux, which doesn't mean that it doesn't work, but it just means that you need to understand that the drivers exist before committing to it. Using a LiveCD/USB does not allow upgrading the BIOS easily.

Upgrading the BIOS is done by following instructions from the manual or support page.

Regarding compatible memory, usually the vendor of the memory lists whether they are compatible with a given motherboard. I'd expect memory of the right size from every manufacturer to work.

You asked the same question in 2023.

I think the market value for such a laptop is such that anyone willing to take it from you for free would be a good deal, mostly because the memory is so slow.

@Crazy Cattle 3D I had a similar scare on an older Acer. Turned out it only liked single‑rank 8GB DDR3L at 1.35V, not 1.5V, and needed the latest BIOS. I fixed it by updating BIOS, cleaning slots, reseating, then testing each stick alone. Also match speed (often 1066/1333) and check SPD with dmidecodein Linux Mint.

No, it does not match. I have 1X 8GB RAM. This is the specifications I could find on the internet.

The specifications state that per module the maximum is 4GB. As such, your memory is not compatible.

    Thanks for the reply.

It seems like I will have to change the 8GB RAM to 2X 4GB RAM. 😥 Does this mean I can't use any other brand like HIKSEMI HIKER? Any chance you can tell me where in Mauritius I can find Elpida RAM? Some of the info I got recommends 1X 8GB instead of 2X 4GB. That I need to boot up from a live Linux USB drive and update the BIOS to fix the error. I have tried 2X 4GB previously, with no success. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I have so far tried 1X 4GB, 2X 4GB, and then someone recommended 1X 8GB, because on the Acer site it says maximum is 8GM. None of these worked. Other advice I found recommend booting up from a live Linux USB drive and update the BIOS to fix the error. Thanks.

Thanks. I already have Linux mint installed on it. I have no wish to get rid of my Acer because it's the only laptop I could install Linux on. I installed Linux Mint in 2023 and with Linux installed I tried to update my laptops RAM to 4GB RAM. When the laptop had only the the 4GB RAM in it showed a blank screen. When I added the 2GB RAM it switched on, but only saw the 2GB RAM.
