Hi @chez0403, Don't use PC HelpSoft Driver Updater, don't use any 3rd-party bloatware with Windows but only Window Check for Updates with Optional updates enables to update your BIOS version and drivers.

Why PCHelp Driver Updater Fails and Should Be Avoided

    1. Poor Driver Matching It often installs generic or incorrect drivers, especially for chipset, audio, and GPU components. This leads to instability or failed updates.

    2. No OEM Validation It doesn’t source drivers from Acer, Intel, AMD, or Realtek directly. That means no firmware-level compatibility checks.

    3. Aggressive Monetization Most features are locked behind a paywall, and it may push unnecessary updates to justify its existence.

    4. System Risk Failed updates can corrupt device configurations, especially if rollback points aren’t created.

hat computer do you have? Which OS is running on it? Which driver is showing the issue? "Generic software component" doesn't help much…

    Thx @Puraw

Sadly Windows update did not update my drivers and the ACER tech used PC HelpSoft Driver Update to get me back online. Since then the driver update was correct except for 1 of the generic. I actually was able to update, but now I am concerned as to why you say DO NOT use!

    Hi chez0403

You should avoid using any driver updater utilities — they can install incorrect or generic drivers, and in some cases even corrupt your Windows installation.

    To remove PC HelpSoft:

    1. Open the Settings app (gear icon in your Start menu).
    2. Go to Apps → scroll down and locate PC HelpSoft.
    3. Select it, then choose Uninstall.

Be aware it may not remove itself cleanly; remnants can stay behind in the registry and may interfere with normal processes (including telemetry).

Stick to Windows Update (including Optional updates) or your OEM’s support page for safe driver and BIOS updates.

To identify and fix a driver that failed to update, start by checking for driver issues in Device Manager. If a yellow triangle icon appears next to a device, it indicates a driver problem. You can then try updating the driver through Device Manager or by downloading the latest driver from the manufacturer's website. If the issue persists, consider checking for Windows updates, including optional driver updates, and restarting your computer.

    Detailed Steps:
    1. Open Device Manager:
Press the Windows key, type "Device Manager", and select it from the search results.
    2. Locate the problematic device:
Expand the categories in Device Manager to find the device with the driver issue. A yellow triangle or exclamation mark indicates a problem.
    3. Try updating the driver:
Automatic Update: Right-click the device and select "Update driver." Then, choose "Search automatically for drivers".
Manual Update: If automatic update doesn't work, download the latest driver from the manufacturer's website and select "Browse my computer for drivers" in Device Manager to point to the downloaded driver.
    4. Check for Windows Updates:
Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for updates, including optional driver updates.
    5. Consider other solutions:
Restart your computer: After updating the driver or installing Windows Updates, restart your computer to apply the changes.
Disable core isolation (if necessary): In Windows Security, go to Device Security > Core Isolation details. Temporarily turn off Core isolation, restart your computer, and try updating the driver again. You can turn it back on later if desired.
Consider a clean boot: If the issue is caused by a background program, a clean boot can help identify the culprit.
