I use my aspire 5 as a standard PC and I would like to switch it on and off without opening the lid. How can I do that?

Hi Maurice, Using a laptop like a desktop might seem convenient, but it comes with serious risks — especially if you're trying to run it with the lid closed. Most Acer laptops, including the Aspire 5, do not support a Wake on Power (AC) BIOS option, so powering it on without opening the lid isn’t officially supported.

More importantly, closing the lid disables airflow from the keyboard and palm rest area, which are part of the passive cooling design. If the fans are active and the lid is shut, heat buildup can toast the CPU or even damage the motherboard, especially during prolonged use. I've seen this happen firsthand, and it's not pretty.

If you're aiming for a desktop-like setup, consider a laptop cooling pad and keep the lid slightly ajar — or better yet, invest in a mini PC or NUC designed for that purpose. Laptops are engineered for mobility, not stationary heat endurance.

To power on an Acer Aspire 5 laptop without opening the lid, you'll need to use a keyboard shortcut or a connected external mouse and adjust the power settings in Windows. To power off without opening the lid, use the keyboard shortcut (Windows key + X, then U, then U again to shut down).

    Powering On:
Connect peripherals: Ensure your mouse (either external or trackpad) is connected and working. Access power options: Go to the Windows Start Menu and click on the power icon.
Select Shut Down or Restart: Choose either "Shut down" or "Restart" from the menu.
Use keyboard shortcuts (alternative): If you can't use the mouse, press the Windows key + X, then U, then U to initiate a shutdown.
Wake on USB: In some cases, you can enable "Wake on USB" in the BIOS settings, which allows the laptop to power on when a USB device is connected.

    Powering Off:
    1. Shut down using Windows:
You can shut down through the Windows Start Menu and power options, or by using the keyboard shortcut (Windows key + X, then U, then U).
    2. Hibernate or Sleep:
Consider using Hibernate or Sleep mode instead of Shut Down, and enable Wake on USB if available.
