CPU Reaching 100°C on Low Load – Thermal Paste Issue?

I have a PHN-16-72 laptop that I bought about 6 months ago. I've updated the BIOS to version 1.17, and all drivers and Windows 11 updates are installed.

While playing Sekiro on high settings (which recommends a GTX 970), my GPU usage stays around 40% and CPU usage around 33%. However, the CPU temperature spikes up to 100°C, while the GPU stays around 78°C.

Is it normal for the CPU to reach 100°C under such low usage, or could this be a thermal paste issue? I'd appreciate any advice or insights.

Make sure that you have all the Win-11 version 24H2 updated to the last OS build: 26100.4770, set the NVidia GPU only in bios and PredatorSense settings, and only use the NVidia gpu and not the cpu graphics, as that is the best way to operate these gaming laptops.

If you game allot you should change the paste on the cpu and gpu in these laptops every 3-4 months to liquid metal paste, I use the Thermal Grizzly as its a high end product. I play games like Assetto Corsa EVO & Corsa, F1-24, Le mans Ultimate Battlefield V and my PHN16-71 doesn't overheat on these settings, but I also use Thermaltake multi fan Massive 12 Max Notebook Cooler which does help allot to reduce temps also.

Note: that I've also found that having a high amount of ram also helps these laptops to run cooler and more efficiently, I'm running my PHN16-71 on 64GB at 2x 32GB DDR5-4800MT/s CL40, and my laptops works flawlessly and doesn't overheat within these games even when playing for prolonged periods of time. Your PHN16-72 with the 14th Gen CPU that runs on DDR5-5600MT/s CL46 type ram will run on a 96GB kit at 2x 48GB DDR5 easily and by upgrading to this capacity, it will operate allot better and cooler in games and overall. Good luck and hope this assists you further.

Use these Thermal Grizzly pastes and putty for best results

Use this guide to apply the Conductonaut Liquid Metal paste

Thanks for your detailed explanation! 🙏

I appreciate the insights on liquid metal vs. thermal paste brands.

Currently, I’m using a DeepCool cooling pad and ensuring proper airflow.

Since most games don’t utilize multi-GPU setups, and gaming workloads primarily stress the dedicated GPU (not the CPU/iGPU), could you clarify your earlier point about GPU usage?

Given this, do you think my high temperatures are likely due to a thermal paste issue, or should I investigate other factors?

Great idea ...void your warranty on a 6 month old laptop to re paste. You shouldn't have to do that on a new machine. The problem is the I9 1400hx and Acers rubbish Powerplan and fan curve management in Predatorsense Gaming profile. I have the PH18-72 with the same gpu and get exactly the same temp spikes when using the gaming profile. To get temps under control I just used balanced profile and switch to the dedicated gpu in the bios thus deactivating optimus and the igpu. I hardly see any cpu temp spikes now beyond 90c.
