My Acer Aspire A515-56T has a recurring power issue. It died a few months ago and would not restart. On two separate occasions, after leaving it unused for a month, I was able to boot it by performing a hard reset (holding the power button for 30 seconds) with the charger plugged in. However, after shutting down, it fails to turn on again. I suspect a faulty battery, but has anyone resolved a similar issue before I buy a replacement?

Thanks in advance!

    Hi @javaman99 👋

Thanks for sharing the issue with your A515-56T. Based on your symptoms—only powering on when the battery is drained—it’s likely your battery is interfering with normal startup. Before diving into replacements, let’s run a diagnostic to confirm its health:

🛠️ Battery Report (Windows Built-In Tool):

    1. Open Command Prompt with admin privileges (Win + XCommand Prompt (Admin)).
    2. powercfg /batteryreport
    3. This creates a report at: C:\Users\YourUsername\battery-report.html
    4. Open it using Microsoft Edge, press Ctrl + P or right-click and select Print → Microsoft Print to PDF.
    5. Attach the PDF to your reply so we can review cycle counts, full charge capacity, and degradation patterns.

🔄 Bonus tip: There’s a BIOS update available (v1.36 from April 18, 2024) that addresses power communication issues and patches LogoFAIL (CVE-2023-40238). If you're on an older version, updating could help resolve edge-case boot logic problems.

@Puraw - Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I am unable to turn on the laptop. When I plug in the adapter and turn it on, nothing happens. I did the power button reset procedure but no success. What would you suggest?

    Hi javaman99,

Try this; Power drain + CMOS reset: Open the back of the laptop and disconnect the battery cable from the motherboard. Locate the CMOS module (with 2 twisted wires Red and Black next to the battery) and remove the coin battery. Shorten the +/- terminals inside the CMOS capsule for 2 seconds with a bended paperclip and put the coin battery back with the + sign facing up, close the CMOS capsule. Next, press the Power Button on the keyboard for 10-15 seconds after that remove the RAM module and if you have a spare Ram module insert that or just reseat the original RAM module firmly in the slot, reconnect the battery cable to the motherboard. Close the laptop, plug-in the adapter and try to boot.

If your laptop isn't turning on when plugged in, the issue could be with the power adapter, the power jack, the battery, or even internal components. Start by checking the power adapter for any damage and ensuring it's properly connected. Try a different power outlet and see if the laptop charges. If the problem persists, try a hard reset (disconnecting the battery and power adapter, holding the power button for 30 seconds) and potentially resetting the BIOS. If these steps don't work, it's recommended to seek professional help as it could be a more serious hardware issue.

Here's a more detailed breakdown of troubleshooting steps:
    1. Check the Basics:
Power Adapter: Ensure the power adapter is properly connected to both the laptop and the wall outlet. Check for any visible damage to the adapter, cable, or power prongs.
Power Outlet: Try a different power outlet to rule out a faulty one.
Charging LED: Observe the charging LED on the laptop (if it has one) to see if it lights up when plugged in. If the adapter has an LED, make sure it's also lit.
    2. Try a Hard Reset (also known as Power Drain):
Unplug the power adapter and remove the battery (if possible).
Press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds to drain any residual power.
Reconnect the battery and power adapter, then try turning on the laptop.
    3. Inspect for Physical Damage:
Check the power button for any signs of damage or if it's stuck.
Examine the charging port for any debris or damage.
    4. Reset the BIOS:
Consult your laptop's manual or manufacturer's website for instructions on how to reset the BIOS.
This can sometimes resolve issues related to the laptop's startup sequence.
    5. Seek Professional Help:
If the above steps don't work, there could be a more serious hardware issue, such as a problem with the motherboard, battery, or other internal components.
Take your laptop to a qualified technician or the manufacturer's support center for diagnosis and repair.

@Axxo - Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, I am unable to turn on my laptop after following the procedure you outlined. I also took out the battery and tried to turn the laptop on. At this point, I am thinking there may be an issue with the motherboard and not just the battery. Thoughts?

    Thanks!

Do you see the amber charging indicator when the laptop is plugged in?

@AnhEZ28 - I did see the amber charging indicator when the battery was connected. However, the laptop did not turn on. So, I removed the battery and when I plugged in the charger, there was no amber charging indicator.

I did notice there was another blue indicator that turned on when I pressed the start button on the laptop. It stayed on for 2 seconds and then turned off. Not sure what that means. Any ideas?

Is this from removing the battery or after plugging the battery back in?
