Why does my Acer Aspire A315-59-30HT lag when plugged in, but run normally on battery?

Hi Acer Community,

I’m having a persistent issue with my Acer Aspire A315-59-30HT where the CPU speed drops to 0.40 GHz when the charger is plugged in. The laptop becomes noticeably slow, even though the CPU utilization stays between 9%–17%. When I unplug the charger, the CPU speed immediately returns to normal and the system runs smoothly again.

I checked Task Manager and confirmed:

  • CPU speed: drops to 0.40 GHz when plugged in
  • CPU utilization: stays low (not maxed out)
  • Memory, GPU, and other components are normal
  • Only the CPU is affected
  • I’m not using battery saver mode
  • Power plan is set to Balanced / High Performance

As a temporary workaround, I tried rapidly unplugging and plugging the charger, and it causes the CPU to go back to normal speed for a few minutes. I know this isn’t ideal, but I used it just to finish work or games.

Here’s more info:

  • Model: Acer Aspire A315-59-30HT
  • Purchased: July 2023
  • OS: Windows 11 (default)
  • No BIOS mods or overclocking

Could this be a firmware, charger, thermal throttle, or power delivery issue? Any tips, similar experiences, or solutions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
