Hey All

Just wondering if anyone else has an issue with the P18-73 RAM speed. I have the RTX 5080 model with 64GB DDR5 RAM and it runs at 4400 MT/s. I have tried different slots or just using one stick and it's always 4400.

Acer's own press release states up to 196GB RAM at 6400 MT/s -

For some reason the site decided I was finshed and edit isn't working, so I'll start again.

    Hey All

Just wondering if anyone else has an issue with the P18-73 RAM speed. I have the RTX 5080 model with 64GB DDR5 RAM and it runs at 4400 MT/s. I have tried different slots or just using one stick and it's always 4400.

Acer's own press release states up to 196GB RAM at 6400 MT/s - See specs for the Helios 18 AI in the link below

Predator Helios AI Laptops with New Intel Core Ultra Processors and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 Series — Acer Community

I have a two-year-old PH18-71 which has 5600 MT/s DDR5 RAM installed and it runs at 5600 MT/s with 32GB and 5200 MT/s with 64GB, so why would Acer go backwards with RAM speed with a model two generations later? It's baffling.

The RAM installed in my PH18-73 is only 5600 MT/s which I find annoying to begin with, having been lied to in the press release👺. Did Acer decide to save a few bucks last minute?

It really is completely baffling with they would upgrade the CPU, Graphics Card, and NVMe to PCIe 5.0, btu then go backwards wth the RAM.

Any information would be much appreciated.

    Cheers
    Mick

    Hello Mick!

I got the same laptop 2 days ago, and i have a same problem like you. Memory only runs at 4400 Mhz. The bios also shows the same speed. Please if somebody knows the solution, let us know.

    Thank you.

    Hi,

I believe that's possible that future firmware updates for Predator PH18-73 may improve compatibility and stability DDR5 at higher speeds.

Current firmware version is 1.08 (2025/05/29):

The new Predator Helios PH18-73 is fitted with the new Intel® Core™ Ultra 9 Processors like the 275HK cpu which determines the max memory capacity and the memory speed, which the Intel design for the Intel Core Ultra 9 cpu's is memory speed is up to DDR5-6400 MT/s and max capacity is 256GB for this cpu, but Acer must have limited it to 196GB and at this point in time to DDR5-4400MT/s speed..

You need to wait until Acer releases future bios updates for the memory speed to be increased to its max deigned speed, be aware that Acer might not allow your PH18-73 mainboard through its bios to reach this high speed like 6400MT/s like they have done to the memory capacity limiting it to 196GB max.

make sure that you install the last bios version 1.08 for your PH18-73 laptop, which also fixes the [Nvidia GPU only] display mode issue, and wait for the next bios update that Acer has for your PH18-73 model, as it could change and allows a higher memory speed, so make sure that you update every bios update from now on to your laptop. Good luck and hope this helps you out further.

    Hi Kornel

I really hope they fix this. It is ridiculous that I have a PH18 from two generations ago with faster RAM speeds.

    Cheers

    Hi Steven

I'm currently running the 1.08 firmware. I really hope this issue is fixed. As I said when replying to @Qosmio, it is ridiculous that I have a PH18 from two generations ago with better RAM speed. I also find it disgusting that Acer would promise 6400MT/s on their press release and give us 4400MT/s. I only recently noticed on my box the specs say 5600MT/s, which is what the RAM is actually specced at. So, I guess 6400MT/s is never going to happen.

If a couple of months go by and we don't get at least 5600MT/s I will be asking for a refund due to false advertising. I've had a Helios 500, Helios 700, and PH18-71 before my current laptop. I've generally been happy but if this false advertising isn't properly addressed, this will be the last Acer I buy.

I think if everyone who owns this laptop started contacting Acer and requesting a refund based on false advertising, they might become motivated to address the issue.

    Cheers

    Mick

I do understand your frustrations, all you have to do is wait, as its very strange for acer to advertise the ram speed at the cpu's specs of 6400MT/s and the PH18 has 4400MT/s speed, as the ram speed should match the Intel cpu specs at DDr5-6400MT/s. Be patient as Acer will fix this issue.

I believe it may be necessary Acer Team Support provide a firmware update that includes an optimized Intel Memory Reference Code (MRC) training algorithm. So that DDR5-6400 MT/s modules can be recognized correctly.

I think it would be interesting to attach here CPU-Z screenshots of the Memory and SPD tabs (of each slot # in use).

CPU-Z (Mainboard tab) can also reveal the CPU microcode installed in the current firmware of the Predator PH18-73.

    Hi @eGomes

Thanks for the info. I have attached the CPU-Z screenshots.

    CPU-Z_CPU.png CPU-Z_Mainboard.png CPU-Z_Memory.png CPU-Z_SPD_Slot2.png CPU-Z_SPD_Slot4.png

I'm very interested to know what you can glean from this information.

I've also just relaised that I previoulsy made an error and stated that I have 64GB when I actuallt have 96GB. The amount of RAM is definitely overkill for the intended purpose of gaming.

I do some photo editing using Lightroom Classic and Photoshop sometimes. As an exerccise I just loaded about 200 recent holidayu pics in raw format into Lightroom and memory use got to 45GB.

    Appreciates the help.

    Cheers

That should read 2,000 raw pics, each around 40MB on disk. From a Canon 5D Mark IV - 30MP sensor. It's rere I would load this many pics at once into the devlop module on Lightroom,

    Thank you @mikeyjames,

Your screenshots prove and should contribute to the investigation of the RAM clock limitation issue in the Predator PH18-73 series.

According to the Intel® Core™ Ultra Processors (Series 2) datasheet, DDR5-6400 operating speeds are only supported by the “HX” series when using 1DPC (1DIMM slot per channel) with CSODIMMs (Clocked Small Outline DIMMs).

Even so, theoretically DDR5-5600 speeds should be guaranteed when using 1DPC (1DIMM slot per channel). Unless the number of ranks per channel (RPC) is interfering. Also I considering that you have tested all possible combinations of the SODIMM slots.

From what I could ascertain, the current MCU (microcode update) for processors codenamed Arrow Lake (CPUID C0662) is 0x118.

Acer has a new bios version 1.09 for the PH18-73 laptop, as it updates the EC chip firmware, so see if that unlocks the higher ram speeds, also see if unlocking the additional bios Advanced settings with the SERP method, will unveil any additional XMP settings that will improve the fixed ram speed from 4400MT/s to 5600MT/s with the ram that you have fitted in your PH18-73 laptop.

So have a look at this guide HERE which is the "[GUIDE] Unlocking Hidden BIOS on Nitro and Predator-Helios/Neo/Triton Laptops using SREP or have a look at the PDF I've included below. Be aware and warned, that if you don't have any experience in bios software mods, I wouldn't attempt this SERP guide, as you could brick your laptop, so get an experienced techs advice and get them to do this mod. Good luck and hope this helps you out.

That’s definitely odd — if Acer’s spec sheet promises up to 6400 MT/s, then 4400 MT/s seems like it’s running at JEDEC defaults rather than the advertised XMP/EXPO profile. Have you checked if there’s a BIOS setting to enable the higher RAM speed profile? Sometimes firmware updates or memory profile tweaks can unlock the advertised performance.

I’ve run into similar bottleneck issues when testing games like Asphalt 8 on high-end rigs — memory bandwidth can make a noticeable difference in performance, especially in graphics-heavy scenarios.
