acer Nitro V15 crashes while playing Elden Ring – black screen, no sound, fans keep spinning

Hi everyone

I’m having a serious issue with my Acer Nitro V15 while playing Elden Ring. After playing for a while, the screen suddenly goes black, all audio stops, but the fans continue spinning as if the laptop is still running. However, the system becomes completely unresponsive — I have to do a hard shutdown to restart it.

Here’s some more context:

I’m using a cooling pad, so overheating is unlikely.

No BSOD or error message appears — just a black screen and no sound.

This only seems to happen during heavy gaming (mainly Elden Ring).

The laptop doesn’t fully shut down — just "hangs" with fans spinning.

I’m using the original Acer charger.

I've tried updating drivers

Install the latest NVidia game ready driver with the GeForce Experience App and play the ELDEN RING game through this app, as NVidia supports this game and the GFE app has the best gpu settings for your V15 RTX gpu for this game NOT to crash.

Make sure that you also have the last bios version and all firmware available for your exact V15 laptop model, as there are different models of the V15, one is an Intel and the other is an AMD V15 model. Also be aware that the Nitro V15 models are known for power starvation issues, as the laptop seems to not get enough power in prolonged gaming and high end gaming when the adapter needs extra battery power to be compensated by battery power to work properly in these gaming situations, as then either the laptop freezes, get a screen blackout or hangs or gets a BSOD crash.

If the above fixes don't fix this issue, then I suggest that you take your laptop to a technician and get them to pinpoint the exact fault with your laptop. If your laptop is under the Acer warranty then send your V15 to Acer tech Support in your country and get them to fix this issue as its common. Good luck and hope this helps you out.

    Welcome @MAKE22,

Are you using an Xbox 360 controller?

If so, try testing it temporarily without connecting it. Then see if these black screen problems when playing Elden Ring persist.

The Acer Nitro V15 crashing to a black screen with no sound while playing Elden Ring could be due to a variety of issues, including power delivery, overheating, driver problems, or game-specific issues.
Here's a breakdown of potential solutions:-

    1. Power and Charging Issues:
Insufficient power: The laptop's power supply might not be sufficient to handle the combined CPU/GPU load during demanding games. Consider upgrading to a higher wattage charger.
Charger compatibility: Ensure the charger you're using is compatible with the laptop and provides enough power.
Undervolting: Try undervolting the GPU to reduce power consumption and thermal load.
    2. Overheating:
Monitor temperatures: Keep an eye on your CPU and GPU temperatures during gameplay. If they're reaching high levels, the system may be shutting down as a safety measure.
Clean out dust: Ensure the laptop's vents are clean and free of dust, which can impede airflow and cause overheating.
Consider an external cooler: You could try using an external cooling pad to help dissipate heat.
    3. Driver Issues:
Update graphics drivers: Make sure your graphics drivers are up-to-date. Consider using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to clean install them.
Consider older driver versions: In some cases, older drivers might be more stable than the latest ones.
    4. Game-Specific Issues:
Start Elden Ring in windowed mode: Try starting Elden Ring in windowed mode by adding "-windowed" to the game's launch settings.
Verify game files: Use Steam's file integrity check to ensure the game files are not corrupted.
Disable Steam overlay: Try disabling the Steam overlay in game settings.
Check for game updates: Make sure you're running the latest version of Elden Ring.
    5. Other Potential Issues:
    Disable third-party anti-malware: Temporarily disable any third-party anti-malware software.
Update Windows: Ensure your Windows installation is up-to-date.
Reset graphics driver: If the screen goes black, try pressing Ctrl+Shift+Windows key + B to reset the graphics driver.
    6. Hardware Issues:
Check RAM: In rare cases, RAM issues can cause black screen crashes. You could try swapping RAM modules to see if that resolves the problem.
    7. BIOS Updates:
Update BIOS: While less common, a faulty BIOS update can sometimes lead to black screen crashes. Ensure you have the latest BIOS version installed.
