GPU Replacement on Predator Orion PO5-640: RTX 5070 Compatibility?

Hello,
I own an Acer Predator Orion PO5-640. Unfortunately, I need to replace the GeForce RTX™ 3080 graphics card due to hardware issues. I am considering purchasing a GeForce RTX™ 5070 and would like to know if anyone has experience regarding the compatibility of this GPU with my system. Do you think it is a good choice for this PC? Has anyone encountered any compatibility or performance issues?
Thank you in advance for your support.

The NVidia RTX5070 gpu needs a min PSU of 650W so your PO5-640s oem 800W PSU will work perfectly, The only thing that the PO5-640 will not have is the PCIE X16 version 5 slot that the RTX5070 requires for full performance functionality, as the PO5-640 support one PCI Express x16 slot PCIE version 4, which won't be able to make the RTX5070 gpu perform at its peak performance but the X16 slot is backward compatible and will work just fine.

With a gpu upgrade you need to also make sure that you are running a fast M.2 SSD like the Samsung 990 Pro with Heatsink M.2 drive and also upgrade the bios to the last version R01-B0 so that the ram can run at the 12th Gen cpu's max ram speed of DDR5- 4800 MT/s and not the DDR5-4400MT/s that Acer initially had the ram restricted to or even higher speed ram with the bios XMP enabled, see the Acer Predator Orion 5000 PO5-640 RAM & SSD Upgrades guide for ram and M.2 SSD drive compatibility. Good luck and hope this helps you out further to upgrade your desktop with proper gpu and ram.

According to Nvidia, the 5070 uses slightly less power than the 3080, so it should be a drop in replacement, except possibly with slightly different aux power connectors.

    Hi there!
Thanks a ton for taking the time to reply – your post really helped me understand the PCIe 4.0 slot limits on my Predator Orion PO5‑640 and what using an RTX 5070 would mean.
If it’s not too much trouble, could you recommend a “drop‑in” graphics card (other than the usual RTX 3080) that I can just slot in without tweaking the BIOS, power supply or extra cabling?
Thanks again for the help, and have a great day!

The PO5-640 was fitted oem by Acer with the highest gpu model the NVidia RTX3070 gpu so the best upgrade is to the newer either RTX4070 or the RTX5070 as these gpu's will be a great upgrade in performance.

Below is a conclusion of the test between the oem RTX3070 gpu versus the new RTX5070 which is the gpu card that I would chose, but all this depends on your budget, the higher spec NVidia RTX5080 or RTX5090 are better gpu cards, but in my opinion for the PO5-640 desktop that you have the RTX5070 card is the max gpu that I would upgrade to as its a very capable and adequate card for the specs and performance of the PO5-640 desktop and will give you all the performance that you will ever need. Good luck and hope this helps you out.

PC Guide test between the RTX3070 and the RTX5070 gpu's

The RTX 5070 seems to be the clear winner in the comparison between it and the RTX3070 gpu, this is because it has better hardware and software compared to the RTX 3070. In addition, it doesn't cost a whole lot more than what the RTX 3070 did, meaning you're getting more performance while paying slightly more, giving you much better value.

So, if you're deciding to choose between these two GPUs, that is something worth considering. As for the real-world performance difference between these cards, we'll know for sure when we've tested the RTX 5070 in-house.

The RTX 5070 features the new HDMI 2.1b and Display Port 2.1b. This enables it to support up to 4K 12-bit HDR at 480Hz, 8K at 165Hz, and UHBR20 with the same resolutions and refresh rates. With the HDMI, it can support 4K 480Hz and 8K 120Hz.

This is a massive improvement over the RTX 3070’s HDMI 2.1 and Display Port 1.4a capabilities. With these ports, it can support 4K 240Hz and 8K 60Hz with the DP and 4K 120Hz and 8K 60Hz with the HDMI port. So, not only should the RTX 5070 deliver better in-game performance, it can churn out more FPS at 4K and deliver that information via its ports to the monitor.
