Windows 11's Windows Backup fails each time it runs. Whether to a 1 TB empty USB drive or to a partition on the hard drive, whether Windows Security is active or disabled. If fails each time when ending after running for over an hour. Windows 11 is fully updated. Laptop is 2 months old.

Personally I prefer W7 BU System Image creator in Windows11 Control panel (see picture), used it for 18 years (W7-W11) every month, backed up and restored images flawlessly from external USB drives like Seagate Backup Plus 2-4TB, it creates the Windows Recovery USB disk at the end which is a critical tool if you have issues with Windows that no longer boot and is used to restore the backups.

As a bonus, the VHD image file created by W7 BU can be mounted in File Manager Windows7 thru Windows11 24H2 to browse and copy your backed up files, no special software required.

Just some additional advice, as I've been using the Macrium Reflect backup system for years as its the best and most efficient and easiest on the market. With this backup software you can add a Macrium Reflect System Recovery menu option to your PC boot menu. By doing this you can restore a system image (the compete and exact C:\ boot drive) without a recovery CD, read more here, as this is the best and most efficient backup of your windows on the market. Good luck and hope this has helps you out further.

"Personally I prefer W7 BU creator in Windows11 Control panel"

That's the app I'm referring to. I've used it for years also, on other Acer notebooks and Dell notebooks, Windows 7, 10 and now 11. I've never had this particular problem before. Space problems, sure. AV problems, sure. But they are not the cause now, which is why I need help. I've even refreshed Windows 11 and it hasn't helped either.

I like the Windows 7 BU app because it allows me to restore backed up files in addition to the whole OS drive when needed.

Hi, only System Image creator works, File History or BU individual files not recommended, try to backup the complete boot drive (3 volumes):

    Backup.PNG Backup2.PNG

What is your laptop full model, is BIOS up to date, try to reset BIOS, what Windows11 version do you have 24H2?

    Acer Aspire 515-58PT, Windows 11 24H2 for x64

    Screenshot 2025-05-09 134504.png Screenshot 2025-05-09 134611.png Screenshot 2025-05-09 134722.png Screenshot 2025-05-09 134839.png Screenshot 2025-05-09 134913.png

Now you see what I see.

Results the same as previously described. This from just a system image run. AV on or off, System image or User files or both. Never have had this before, occasionally yes but not like this. A machine with 16 GB of RAM is new, could that be the problem??

I like the Windows 7 Backup/Restore app because in addition to system drive restores it supports individual User file restores. I could do DD backups with Linux but prefer not to. Just want my favorite, trusted app to work, like it always did. :-)
