Helios 18 screen replacement

Hello all. I accidentally threw my TV remote at my laptop and it damaged the right side of the screen. It had lines going up and down and was quite nerve racking. My computer is out of warranty, so ACER quoted $1200 for repair. Local techs in the area quoted $700. On Ebay, I found a company with high ratings and checked with them. They had a brand new screen that would work for only $250.

I thought everything was going fine after installation until I realized I couldn't adjust the brightness from the keyboard anymore. I also couldn't adjust from the right lower corner menu either. My display settings would also not control the brightness. The only way I have control over the display is to use my GPU and adjust it from the Nvidia center. It will not do anything on the integrated graphics card. Here lately, when my computer is running low on power (thanks to using my GPU all the time), the screen absolutely goes crazy with flickering. When I plug it in, it works fine.

I've updated everything I can think of. I have no idea what to do now other than buy a brand new gaming laptop. The brightness levels are hurting my eyes. It auto adjusts somehow so when I'm looking at this screen, it is SUPER bright. If I'm looking at something dark, it is at tolerable levels.

Please help!

First thing that you should do is install HWiN64 software and under this software's Monitor section, see the exact model screen that your PHN18 laptop if you can still see the screen, otherwise take the broken screen out and see its model number, as it should be one of the listed screens below of what Acer lists for the screens that were fitted to the PHN18 laptops.

Look at LS Laptop Screens like model N180JME-G51 C1 that is USD $79.99 for this 18" / 165Hz / 40pin video connector screen, as its easy to fit yourself if you are computer savvy. Good luck and hope this helps you out further.

This is the monitor that is showing up in my device manager. I don't know why it is doubled. Even in my display settings, it says I have two monitors, and the one I'm using is #2. When I try to go to #1, my screen blacks out and won't return unless I power the computer off and back on.

Hi @frigidhealer unfortunately, there's little you can do in this case, as you installed a display that may not be compatible. In any case, contact the company that installed your new display and have them check the problem.

There's no way to fix this problem, although you can try two options:

    • Remove the graphics driver and let Windows install a generic one that Windows Update will update later.
    • Load the BIOS to default settings so that it assumes the correct power state.
