Acer Connect Enduro M3 – extremely slow download when sharing internet with router Beryl AX

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue with my Acer Connect Enduro M3 and I wonder if anyone else has experienced the same.

I bought this router primarily to use it as a mobile internet source for my travel router – a GL.iNet Beryl AX. However, there's a major issue:

  • When the Beryl AX connects to the Acer (either via Wi-Fi or USB tethering), upload speeds are fine, but download speeds drop to ~1 Mbps, sometimes even lower.
  • I’ve tested this in multiple locations with good LTE/5G signal.
  • When I use any other internet source (phone hotspot, regular Wi-Fi, other LTE routers), the Beryl AX performs perfectly – so this is not an issue with the Beryl router.
  • The Acer M3 itself works well when sharing internet directly to a phone or laptop – only when another router is the client, the problem appears.

I’ve already:

  • Updated the firmware to the latest version
  • Performed multiple factory resets
  • Tried both USB and Wi-Fi modes

Has anyone used the Acer M3 in a similar way with a travel router or repeater? Any ideas for solving this?

Thanks in advance for your help!

The Acer Connect Enduro M3 is probably not compatible with your GL.iNet Beryl AX router, that is why and the only thing that I can put that down to. Use only the Acer Connect Enduro M3 5G Mobile Wi-Fi on its own to connect to the Wi-Fi network.

Thanks again for the reply – I really appreciate you taking the time to respond.

I’m open to the idea that USB tethering may have limitations or might not be fully compatible with all client devices – even though it’s interesting that upload works fine, which makes it harder to blame the hardware alone. But okay, let’s set USB tethering aside for now.

What I really don’t understand is this:

    • The Wi-Fi network shared by the Acer Connect Enduro M3 works fine with phones, tablets, and laptops.
    • But when I try to use that Wi-Fi as a WAN source for another router (GL.iNet Beryl AX in this case), download speeds drop to 1 Mbps or less, while upload stays normal.
    • The same setup works perfectly with any other mobile hotspot, home router, or even tethered phone.

So if both routers are using standard Wi-Fi protocols, and the Beryl AX can successfully connect and authenticate, there’s no logical reason it shouldn’t work – unless something in the M3 firmware is causing the issue. Possibly a problem in routing, NAT, or QoS.

Also, with all due respect, the suggestion to “just use the Acer M3 directly” and avoid using a second router isn’t really a solution – it’s more like a workaround. It doesn’t solve the underlying problem. Travel routers like the Beryl AX are used by many people who want to:

    • Share VPN across all devices,
    • Extend limited Wi-Fi range,
    • Add firewall and DNS-level protection,
    • Connect wired devices (via Ethernet port),
    • Maintain consistent settings between locations.

That’s exactly why I bought the Acer M3 – and it should support this use case.

I've reported this to Acer support already, but if anyone in the community has ideas, workarounds, or technical insights – I’m all ears.

    Thanks again!

    Hi!
Thanks for your reply – it’s really helpful to know I’m not the only one seeing this issue.

    Just to clarify:

    • When you connect your Beryl to the Acer M3 via Wi-Fi, you get normal download and upload speeds, right?
    • Did you have to change any special settings on the Beryl AX (like MTU size, Wi-Fi mode, DNS settings, etc.) to make it work properly?
    • Also, which band are you connecting over – 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz?
In my case, I tried both bands, but I always get around 1 Mbps download no matter what I do.

Would really appreciate it if you could share any specific configuration you’re using!

    Thanks a lot!

I didn't change any specific settings, my M3 is on 5ghz mode only and it's working fine with beryl. The only thing that I noticed with USB Tethering is that the speeds come back fine when I use VPN on the beryl. But without VPN the speeds are not fine. I'll come up with this issue with the support for GLI.Net support and see what they have to say

Slow downloads when sharing internet from an Acer Connect Enduro M3 with a router could be due to several factors, including background processes, network driver issues, or interference. Troubleshooting steps include checking for background downloads, updating drivers, clearing browser cache, and reducing network interference.

    1. Background Processes and Bandwidth Consumption:
      Check for background downloads/updates:
Ensure that no programs or applications are running in the background that might be consuming bandwidth, such as software updates, cloud sync, or large file transfers.
      Monitor network activity:
Use Windows' network monitoring tools (like Resource Monitor or Task Manager) to identify which processes are using the most network bandwidth.
    2. Network Drivers:
      Update network drivers:
Outdated or corrupted network drivers can lead to slow speeds and other network issues. Download the latest drivers for your Acer Connect Enduro M3 from the manufacturer's website or use Windows Update.
      Check driver version:
Ensure you are using the latest version of the drivers. You can find the version in Device Manager.
    3. Browser and Cache:
Clear browser cache and cookies: If the slow download issue is only affecting browsing, clearing your browser's cache and cookies may help improve performance.
