External hard drive works on HP laptop but glitches on Acer desktop. Any suggestions?

I recently purchased an external hard drive for backup purposes. It connects normally to my HP laptop but my Acer desktop will not function with it. The monitor loads the external hard drive, then flashes to files on the desktop and back and forth continuously from one to the other about once every second or so. Both computers use Windows 11. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

You need to format it and initialize it in Disk Management by right clicking the external drive and then formatting and initializing it as then it will be recognized by File Explorer. Good luck and hope this helps you out.

Thank you for your suggestions. Unfortunately, all I accomplished was erasing all the data on the external hard disk that had been put on from the HP laptop. I pulled up disk management and it continued to go back and forth between the external disk and other files already on the computer making it nearly impossible to do anything.

When you plug the external HDDs USB plug into your laptop the drive should be showing in Disk Management and of course formatting this drive will erase all data on the external disk, you should have know that, as you never stated that you had data on the HDD, you said it was a new drive that didn't register within windows and File Explorer. This external HDD should register within Disk Management as soon as you plugged it into your laptops USB port. If it doesn't, then the drive is faulty, so you need to get another drive. Good luck.

I was warned by the desktop that all data would be deleted. So I knew that but since all the data was from the laptop, which sits 3 feet away from the Acer desktop normally, I knew I could re-install any lost data. I hoped by going through formatting the problem would be solved - wistful thinking.
