Coil Whine issues on Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 (PHN16-72) — Any BIOS Fix?

Hi everyone,

I recently bought the Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 (PHN16-72) and I'm noticing coil whine, especially when the laptop is plugged in and set to Ultra Performance Mode. The noise is faint during idle (only audible when I place my ear near the keyboard), but becomes noticeably louder under load or high power settings.

I know coil whine is common in gaming laptops, but I'm wondering:

  • Has anyone else experienced this on the PHN16-72?
  • Is Acer aware of this issue on this model?
  • Is there any BIOS update or firmware fix planned or available to reduce the noise?

Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

While coil whine on the Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 is a common issue and not necessarily a sign of a faulty device, here's a breakdown of potential causes and solutions:
    Understanding Coil Whine:-

Coil whine is a high-pitched noise, often a whine or hum, that can occur when electrical components, like power coils, are under heavy load.
    Why it happens:
It's a result of the physical vibrations of the components as they handle high frequencies and currents.
    Is it a problem?
Coil whine itself doesn't usually indicate a performance issue or a defect, but it can be annoying.

    Potential Causes and Solutions:
    Power Supply:
Problem: The noise might originate from the power supply unit (PSU) or the laptop's internal power components.
    Solution:
Try a different power adapter: If you have another power adapter, test it to see if the noise persists.
Reverse AC plug polarity: If your AC plug has a 2-pin design, try reversing the polarity (if possible).
Use the original power adapter: Avoid using USB-C chargers when playing games, and stick with the original brick power adapter.
    Fan Noise:
Problem: The noise could be coming from the fans or the heat pipes/liquid metal cooling system.

Solution: Reduce fan speed: Use software like RivaTuner or MSI Afterburner (or equivalent) to control fan speeds.
Check fan bearings: If the noise sounds like a rattling or grinding, the fan bearings might be failing.
Consider a cooling pad: A cooling pad can help keep the laptop cooler and potentially reduce fan noise.
    Laptop Usage:
Problem: The noise might be more noticeable during high-demand tasks like gaming or video editing.
    Solution:
Use headphones or speakers: Mask the noise with audio.
Adjust power plan: Use a balanced power plan instead of a maximum performance plan.
Undervolt: If your laptop allows, consider undervolting the CPU or GPU to reduce power draw and potentially lower temperatures and noise.
    Contact Acer Support:
If the noise is excessive or causing concern: Contact Acer support for further assistance.
