Screen has lines and makes a crackling noise when viewing video

Periodically, I get the following screen on my Acer Aspire V-571 after I watch video:

Distorted screen

I can't do anything but power it off at this point. It doesn't happen all the time, and it will go days without doing it, and it's just when I watch video, whether in a browser or on the computer. It happens in Ubuntu and Windows 7 so I believe it's a computer issue (screen or graphics card/driver).

Does anyone know what's causing this? Thanks for any help!

Just out of curiosity, if you move the screen around while this is happening does it change? In other words flip the screen back and forward and look for any difference. It could just be the LCD cable that's coming undone. Relatively easy fix. There's also a chance that the graphics card is to blame, could be overheating or just defective.

The next time this happens I will try moving the screen around. The 'funny' thing is Acer just did some work on it a few weeks ago and it didn't do this before then, but that might not have anything to do with it. Thanks for your reply and I'll try your suggestion.

    Hi Tpistol,

Considering you have just had the unit worked on and you have pictures to go along with it I would suggest you contact Acer now before the problem gets worse. Tell them you think your LCD cable is coming undone and offer to send them the picture. Acer takes this sort of thing very seriously and I wouldn't be surprised if they offered to pick up the unit free of charge so they can be sure it's not just going to die out at random.

Of course if the issue happens frequently I would suggest that you go ahead and try my previous advice to be sure, but it couldn't hurt to call them up.

    Take care,
