Hello, I have the Acer N50-640 desktop. It is currently equipped with an i5-12400f. I'm looking to upgrade to the i7-12700k, is this possible?

I figured I would need a new CPU cooler, so I've got that sorted. Here's what I'm unsure about:

  • I'm currently running BiOS version R01-A4, do I need to update the BiOS to support the i7-12700k?
  • Can the Power Supply support the wattage of the new CPU? I believe it's a 500w PSU.

The only thing I have upgraded so far is the RAM, otherwise, the system is unchanged.

You can upgrade to a K with cooling changes as you state, but you won't have access to any K features that aren't also in the standard chips or the F type. The BIOS will not support them, since they didn't offer the N50-640 with that chip from the factory.

Will an update to BiOS version R01-B2 fix that issue?

No, the last N50-640 desktop bios version R01-B1 – dated: 2023/04/25 - did not upgrade the cpu microcode, the last cpu microcode for the N50-640 desktop was updated in the bios version R01-A3 – dated: 2022/02/16 – and it “Update Microcode to M0290672_00000018” as the N50-640 was never fitted with the i7-12700K cpu and all its features fully as Acer never had a bios to do so.

Its useless to upgrade to the i7-12700K as the only thing that you will get is the i7-12700K Intel UHD Graphics 770 as the 13% boost in performance will not be utilized because the Acer bios does not specifically cater for this cpu, all you will have is a hotter TDP cpu with 125W to the oem i7-12700F TDP of 65W which will make the cpu run twice as hot and will need extra cooling, and that is why Acer never fitted this cpu to the Nitro N50-640 desktop range as it probably wasn’t economically viable to put AIO water cooling to the cpu. Good luck and hope this helps you out.
