Hi,
the hinges of my ladies laptop are cracked from the top cover.
Now I was asking myself if I can replace the top, but I think I can not find the same model, …

She as a Swift 5 , SF514-54T , but I can only find SF514-55T
Is the top cover from the SF514 family the same?
The screen itself is NOT cracked

Hi, this is not a DIY job, since this is a 2019 model I recommend asking an Acer accredited PC repair for a repair estimate that will involve replacing the lid, transferring the screen, frame/bezel and if the hinges also broke loose from the main board, that will be a major expense of at least $200 (rough estimate). Consider selling the laptop and buy a 2025 Acer Aspire 3 (A315-24P) for $322 at Amazon.

Thank you for warning, but I know it is not a DIY job. I just don't want to buy a spare-part laptop for 200 dollar when it is not going to fit anyway
We bought the Swift, since it was light, small, huge battery life, and reasonable price

This can not be compared with your suggestion, but, at the very moment, we can not find a decent priced replacement
We checked as well other branches, and there was nothing comparable.
    So :) the question remains

Actually, it can be DIY, I've done a few of them over the years since "thin and light" became the standard for laptops. Use a good, hard setting, epoxy like JB Weld Metal and rebuild the screw mounts for the hinges. You don't have to worry about making the laptop ever so slightly heavier than is was after all. If you fill in the existing mount areas where things have pulled loose, then create a new flat surface with a bit of plumbers teflon tape, you can use a small hand drill to recreate the screw hole and reassemble after the epoxy has fully cured. It will likely hold better than the original…

The root cause is that T&L design, the cases have to be thinner and there has to be less plastic there, so the screw mounts are just weak enough that over time the screws pull loose. The newest designs have often gone to metal cases, making them slightly heavier but much more robust.

Yes, this is an option, I have seen people doing it, and we will go for that, if needed

But we prefer a replace, …
