Today arrived 4 discs: SCD Bootable, RCD 1, RCD 2, LPCD (German language pack).

Booted SCD - appeared known Acer Recovery Management v 9.1.8

After few seconds asked for RCD 1 and copies the images .SWM. It lasts some long minutes.

Then the copy progress shows 72%, it asks for RCD 2 and continues to copy images.

--- The difference to the images copy from the original recovery DVD - the copy doesn't stop at 86% as before but continuous until 100% ---- I believe, this is a good sign to get a different restore result. ----

After about 20 min I inserted shortly the system disc again and then the language pack.

Then follows operation called Updating System - needs approx half an hour.

Now, after about an hour of installing system and language pack, the system restarted ans installs the software. This didn't happen with an original Restore DVD.

Strange, software installation breaks in a point of 5/64 and restarts. OK, after restart continues in point 6/64. Am curious ... Follows SW installation with several tablet restarts. It is neverending ...

What you definitely need for the W3 recovery, is a big portion of patience. Since the recovery start is it already 2,5 hours and still not finished.

The last installation step is: Installing Sysprep - Factory Mode. It lasts about 30 min. Restart, account and PC settings and apps installation. I want to save the factory settings in Acer Recovery Management - it doesn`t work "The configuration of harddisk doesn't response the Factory Settings". Strange, just after installation. I give up and continue to install Windows Updates and antivirus.

Seems to be, the problem with alaunchx.exe has been solved. Good job, Acer. I am really happy, I discovered the failed recovery DVD in a warranty period.

Have the same issue. After the malfunction of touchscreen display I decided to restore the system. First problem: booting from DVD - no possibility to choose Restore Computer to Factory Settings but just Restore Operating System to Factory Settings.

After the installation the half of apps is missing - Office and others. Boot is very slow (original state - 7s, now about a minute) and after that - this Error Message. Tried to delete from Register StartUp - No chance, the item is always back in register after bootup.

I spent few hours with Acer support - their conclusion - DVD defect. So, I ordered a new DVD.

Now experimenting with w3 until arrival of DVD - the all Apps are in hidden directory C:\OEM\Preload, etc.

    Anything new, I will update.

I have solution which has also some disadvantages but it works in a suitable way for me.

I downloaded Windows 8.1 Preview ISO Image from Microsoft Site. Saved ISO image, by click created a virtual disk E: and installed.

Before the installation I moved the directory C:\OEM to SD card in order to install Office later on.

It works all fine excluded Windows 8 Settings (see the picture). I hope, this is just translation issue (using German version) and Using settings from old windows environment (Control Panel) have no problem with setup.

I will try to install the english version later.

We have two Iconia W3 tablets and since we wanted to resell them we reinstalled them from original DVD and got the same alaunchx.exe error on both. We tried the installation multiple times but with no success.

Then we tried updating the bios to 1.07 (from 2013/10/04) and the tablets STOPPED BOOTING FROM THE ORIGINAL DVD ALTOGETHER. WE NOW CAN'T EVEN START THE RECOVERY. When loading from dvd they stop working or shut down completely after a while.

is happening with these devices. Do we have two faulty devices with the same fault? - i don't think so, that would be incredibly unlucky. My bet is Acer royally screwed something up.

Edit: And we of course tried both DVDs with the same results so i doubt the DVDs are faulty

    a) I saw those blank bars with the WIN 8.1 preview for a number of tiled apps (e.g. BingMaps) but not under desktop. I have not seen them with the rtm version currently on MSDN.

    b) My W3 BIOS is v1.04 and I have never had any charging or failure to boot issues.

to janslany: did you set the new bios after re-installation?

Well i solved the problem with the new bios. It didn't somehow support our usb hub. We used the hub with the old bios with no problems and it still works fine with other devices.

Once i connected the external DVD directly, we were able to boot it again. But of course the installation stopped again with alauncherx error.

Interesting. I only have one dual-layer DVD per tablet. I suppose other people too. Seems like i will have to order these 4 to finally get the tablets to work.

Thanks a bunch there.  I will be talking to Acer shortly and getting the disc.  Just annoying they would send one disc when you need more then one.

I wonder if the dual layer disc has everything from the original three discs on it. There's a lot more room on a dual layer... I have the thumb drive for my W700 and it had it all in one.

I presume there is everything on the DL DVD but it has some software bug that stops it from installing. And maybe the four dvds are a different version that works.

Out of curiosity can anyone who has the alaunchx.exe error with the DL DVD post where did they buy the tab? Seeing that tomnovak ordered german dvds and my tablets are also from germany, maybe there is a problem with the german version of the dvd.

I have had the same issue except I finally got it to restore from the Disc that came in the box. My problem is that the **bleep** thing only runs on the power cord. The battery stopped working whn I did the BIOS update to 1.0.7. A portion of the BIOS update hung when it said it was doing an "FW" update. I think I will have to send it back for repair as tech support won't help you if you did a BIOS update.

Maybe someone make .iso image of this "right" recovery CD's? Or we can download it somewhere?

I had the same problem. I got the 4 discs, tried again, same error along with new one. Called Acer again and they just told me to send the tablet in.

I found the problem. You need to disable the UAC, follow the steps of this blog:

    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/hyperyash/archive/2012/07/18/disabling-user-account-control-in-windows-8.aspx

Once the UAC is disabled, restart the tablet and it will continue installing the missing programs.

For enable the UAC, you must do the opposite.

Where did you buy the new recovery DVD's? I can't see them on the spanish web site of Acer

    Regards

I have had good luck creating .ISOs with ImageBurn . YMMV.

Keep in mind that the Acer Clover Trail tabs have very limited USB power, I use a powered hub to avoid overload (have seen the error message).

And how is that the solution? When will you disable UAC? before or after restart? Give more info
