I took my comp to Geeks to see if they could change my partitions. After working on it they said that the MB had 3 caps burned. I saw no evidence of that. I turned on unit and found that the HD was wiped clean. I can get into BIOS  but after installing a new HD and trying to load the system from the factory discs, that HD was wiped clean also. Geeks changed something when trying to change partitioning. I need help.

    Hi wayneshouse

Sometimes, albeit quite rarely, when changing partitions on your hard drive, data can get wiped. Did you make an image backup before taking your computer to Geeks? If so, try re-imaging your pc.

When you say you installed a new hard dive (and Windows on it) - there was nothing there? IE Windows wasn't installed? Check in Bios to see if the computer is recognising the drive, and that it is set to first boot from it. It may be that your Bios settings got changed, or even a loose cable. Try loading default settings in your Bios.

Do you get any error messages?

If all is as it should be, it may be possible that your factory disks could be damaged, & not installing Windows on your HDD. If a friend or family member has a retail copy of the same version of Windows that was on your pc, try to install that.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the input. I wasn't too clear I guess. I can get into BIOS and everything look ok. Yes i did copy my info on a ext. drive. When I say the hard gets wiped clean I mean no cmos on it and any computer doesn't see it. I guess I have 2 problems-the fact that the system discs wipe the HD's and How can I install cmos on the wiped clean HDs?

    Hello again wayneshouse!

System disks usually do wipe clean your hard drive before they install a fresh copy of Windows on them, although often you can just do a "repair" install if desired.

Basically, if you're saying there is nothing on your hard drive, plus BIOS doesn't "see" it, then it looks like your hard drive is dead. Buying a replacement will allow you to install Windows from your disks.

By the way, CMOS is the memory on your motherboard, that stores all your BIOS settings, and any changes you make to it. It doesn't get stored on your hard drive.

Thanks finlux, I tried loading a new HD and the same thing happened (wiped completely clean) when i tried to load discs. Again no other computer sees that new HD. Its wiped clean. The first system disc start to load but after awhile it freezes and won't finish and ask for disc 2.

    Hi wayneshouse

Then perhaps Geeks were right, 3 caps may have burned!

The only thing left is the motherboard. A local engineer may be able to replace the burnt caps. This may solve the problem. Other than that, see if eBay has a replacement.
