Acer laptop [ANV15-41] battery dropping rapidly from 80%, Is this a hardware issue?

Hey, see the image above.

To the point, I opened HWInfo today, and stumbled upon this.
The battery wear level is 17.9%, which I don't think is good.

I use my laptop with charger plugged in only during gaming, with Smart Charing on and Limited to 80%. I play games like 25-26 hours a week and other than that it's just casual work like surfing, coding, yt, etc. all too on Eco Mode with Low Power Efficiency(WinSettings), even as I write this post it is on the aforementioned settings.

I last unplugged my device, after charging it to 80% like 20 minutes ago and it is already at 56%.

I got my hands on the laptop on 05, October 2024. So it is like only 3 months and 10 days old.

Also with this, I'd like to ask,

  1. is charging cut OFF, like disabled, once the battery reaches 80%? i.e. the power from AC Adapter bypasses the battery straight to the components.
  2. If not then, while gaming, should I ensure the battery is already at 80% to ensure bypassed power to components instead through the battery to ensure minimal battery wear?
  3. If none of the above, then is it possible that Acer will soon release a BIOS update or Software update to implement this?

14 minutes have passed since I wrote about the battery percentage and right now the battery is at 48%.

Please ask, if any more information is required.

Try to calibrate the battery using the laptop until it shuts off and recharge to 100% (80% charging limit is off).

@AnhEZ28 hello, I tried battery calibration.

The charging phase completed but the discharging phase failed, the lights went out, but I noticed one thing Time Remaining was stuck on 10 hours 56 minutes for like 2 hours 10am-12:34(writing this post at 12:40, without charger). My battery right now at 12:40 is 97%. I checked the wear level again and it was somehow at 6.7%.

I guess, I'll have to try calibration again some time.

Thank you, also if you can please answer my doubts/questions and if you can't please mention someone who can, those 3 are very important questions and will decide how I treat my charging/usage, gaming, etc.

Hi, this model is from September 2023, so the battery is probably >1 year old. Generate a Windows battery report and disable NitroSense or Acer Care 80% battery limiter and "Calibration" options in Windows Services. Reset BIOS and uninstall these 2 battery drivers in Device manager:

Reboot and charge the battery to 100%, run a Windows battery report, paste this in the command prompt: powercfg /batteryreport and open the report with your Edge browser, right click and select "Print to Microsoft PDF", attach the report to your reply, type @Puraw or use "Quote" when you reply so I will get an alert. Leave the power adapter (don't use a USB-C charger) plugged in 24/7 not when gaming only, and make sure that the battery is charged 100% at all times, the Smart chip inside the battery will divert the adapter power to the main board after the battery is charged 99.99% but not sure what happens after 80% when you use Acer Care charge limiter option.

    hello @Puraw, just to make sure, the model I'm using has an AMD R7 7735HS, a RTX 4050 6GB and 16GB DDR5 @4800MT/s.

Now, coming to your instructions… I did these in a sequence:
    1. disable nitrosense battery setting(changed it to Full Charge Mode)
    2. reset bios
    3. removed mentioned drivers
    4. reboot, charged to 100% and now writing this post while charger is plugged in.
    5. created a battery report(p.f.a.)

But I'm sorry, I forgot the earlier battery report, before step 1-3.

Just to confirm: you are saying I need to keep my laptop plugged in all the time, whenever I'm using it, not just for gaming? at the time I'm writing this post, the battery is at 100% and not discharging, since I'm plugged in.

If you have the 80% charging limit enabled, it will cut the battery charging after it has reached 80% and use the power straight from the AC adapter.

While gaming and the battery is not full, the laptop still reserves some power to charge the battery.

Be sure to keep the charger plugged in all the time to minimize the battery wear level.

Hi, I can see on the battery report that you no longer use Acer's battery limiter after January 16; very good. Keep the adapter plugged all the time and the battery fully charged to 100%. Use the battery only as a backup device in case of power blackouts or when moving around without immediate access to an electrical wall outlet. You should have more battery backup than only 2 hours, change your Power Plan to Balanced and in Power & Battery settings change Power Mode to Best Power Efficiency for both Battery and adapter operations. Open Task Manager-Processes and if there are more the 80 apps running at the background, uninstall all bloatware and 3rd-party preinstalled programs like browsers, virus checkers and trial versions, also disable the Startup programs and apps. If this concludes your questions, please mark as Answered.
