AN 515-54 Can I upgrade my ACER Nitro 5 screen to 2K for better picture quality

Hi everyone. I have an ACER Nitro 5 (AN 515-54) laptop with an RTX 2060 and 15.6 inch 1080p 120hz screen. I was considering upgrading the screen and after researching I found that I can get the same 1080p screen with ,at most, 165hz refresh rate, which (as I am not a FPS gamer) I don't really need. What if I wanted to switch to a 2K screen to get a better picture quality? I have found a few option with the same connector and everything but only with 2K instead of FHD. Will the system work with it?

Thanks,

Pasquale

I found the 2k 165Hz LCD NE156QHM-NY4. Check if you have this or a similar model at your location.

There should also be a 165hz option. The Rtx 2060 can support it.

It's exactly one of the same ones I found. It has the same connector. I might take the chance and buy it from eBay is something.

Also, get the 40-pin eDP cable. Your AN515-54 still has the 30-pin eDP cable.

Nope, it has the 40 pins eDP (disassembled and checked). I might have written the wrong model number but I know the specs.

I ordered this screen. Now the only question mark is/: will the bios recognize the screen?

It surely will recognize the new screen. Be sure to unplug the battery before replacing the screen (very important!)

Upgrading your Acer Nitro 5's screen to a 2K display could definitely improve picture quality, offering sharper visuals and more detail, especially for tasks like photo/video editing or media consumption. As for compatibility, you should first ensure that the new 2K screen has the same connector type as your current display. The RTX 2060 should have no issues handling the higher resolution, but you might need to check that the laptop’s internal display cable supports the new resolution.

Keep in mind that upgrading the display may require some technical know-how, so make sure to check the warranty, or consider getting it done professionally. If you're just looking for a better display without the need for high refresh rates, a 2K panel could be a great upgrade!

Hi, the upgrade was succesful, however the screen should have a refresh rate of 165hz but it's recognized only as 60hz ( I did the UFO test on the web and that doesn't go beyond 60 FPS.) Might this be a compatibility issue or did I get the wrong display?

Can you check the display part number?

In the end, after a lot of tinkering, I as able to override the EDID and overclock the refresh rate to 144hz with CRU and I even tested a couple of games with it, which shows 144FPS as it should. I believe the system cannot communicate with the screen properly (as it's not the original one) and it defaults the refresh rate to 60hz even if it supports the 2K resolution. If you add a different screen resolution with CRU that fixes it. I don't feel like disassembling the screen again but I can confirm that the upgrade can be done.
