After switching on laptop the log in characters not registering, however numerical numbers do register.

    You need to check the keyboard cable if its not come lose from the mainboard plug or its damaged or the keyboard is damaged and needs replacing, as that is the only reason why characters not registering on a keyboard.

    A new keyboard was installed and the issue was not resolved. The computer opens up on the front page and when I hit return the login page comes up and when I put in the chara.ters they dont respond, however, the numerical keys do work After several attempts the computer asked to put in A1B2C3 and enter it then asks for a phrase which I dont have. Is there anyway that I can get all my documents off the machine to load onto another computer?

    Go here at Microsoft to bring up the Windows on-screen keyboard and use that and see if the letters' part of the keyboard work.

    As what is probably happening to your laptop is that its got a faulty EC, this chip that the keyboard is a key matrix, and the EC scans that matrix and processes key presses, forwarding the key events to the chipset that your OS then reads. Whether your touchpad is PS/2 or I2C, the EC handles it and exposes it to the OS, too, so that is what you need a technician to have a look at as the EC chip can be changed and reprogrammed by a technician or in some laptops the laptop automatically reprograms this chip.     1. Go to Start, then select Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard, and turn on the On-Screen Keyboard toggle.
    2. Alternatively, press the CTRL + Windows key + O (letter o) simultaneously.
