SpinN19W3-black screen, power is on, can hear the fan working, beeps whenever things are plugged in

I can see that this is an issue that has been reported elsewhere, but most of the other conversations seem to be full of "start your own thread" comments, so here I am.

My Spin N19W3 is suddenly showing a black screen. The power is on (I can hear the fan working) and there seems to be something going on in relation to an operating system (the machine beeps whenever things are plugged in or unplugged), but nothing on the screen at all.

I've tried the battery reset pinhole on the back and I've tried the F5 / F6 keys, but so far nothing has helped.

I would be grateful to receive any suggestions.
