I’ve had my Acer sf314-41 for 4 years now. All of a sudden it just wouldn’t turn on one day. Nothing I did worked until I reset the battery using the pin but then it wouldn’t turn on unless it was plugged in. It now runs at a significantly slower speed, and programs like capcut and chrome crash so often it’s impossible to get anything done. The battery shown usually ranges from 93% - 96% but as soon as I plug it out it turns off. Do I need to replace the battery?

Hi Jacob, this is a 2019 model and the battery may be bad after 5 years, run a battery report: open the command prompt and paste this: powercfg /batteryreport and open the report with Windows Edge, right click on the opened report and select "Print to Microsoft PDF", attach the PDF file to your reply, click on "Quote" or type @Puraw so I will get an alert. Alternatively buy a new high-grade battery, part number AC14b8K and replace the old one: Amazon.com: AP18C8K Battery for Acer Swift 3 SF314-42 SF314-57 SF314-58 SF314-59, Aspire 5 A514-52 A514-54 A515-56, Aspire 7 A715-42G, Spin 3 SP314-21N SP314-54N, Chromebook 15 CB315-3H CB315-3HT 3INP5/82/70 : Electronics

Hi, this battery does not support Modern Standby in Windows (see red box) and stopped working last month, I recommend replacing it

I had a feeling battery replacement was imminent. Will replacing the battery also help performance? And what can I do in the future to prevent this problem from happening again?

Hi, use high quality Acer endorsed batteries and check the battery manufactory date, cost more than the cheaper OEM batteries but will last twice as long. Keep the adapter connected 24/7 and the battery 100% charged at all times. After you installed the new battery, you will have to do one full charge cycle for BIOS and MS ACPI devices to register the capacity of the new battery otherwise it will use the old bad battery stats. Don't use battery charge limiters or Acer Care Center battery "optimizations" options, these are all based on "Battery Longevity" myths touted online. Disable Fast Startup and Hibernate in "Change what closing the lid does" and "Change settings currently unavailable", reset Power Plan to factory default in "Edit Power Plan". To do the Full Charge Cycle procedure (sometimes called by misnomers "training" or "calibration") you only do this once after a new battery or clean Windows OS is installed: Charge the new battery to 100% either while working or while the laptop is turned off (will be quicker) and give it an extra 10 minutes. Confirm the battery is 100% charged in Windows (not just the battery meter on the taskbar) and disconnect the power adapter. Work till the laptop shuts down automatically (5% charge left) do not shut down manually. Close the lid and plug-in the power adapter. Don't open the lid and let the battery charge to 100% (amber battery LED turns blue) plus an extra 10 minutes. Boot to Windows. That's it.

If the battery is telling the system there's not enough juice available, it will affect performance, sometimes drastically. The OS is slowing things down in order to allow the power to last longer. If the battery is confused as to the charge that is available, you can get those symptoms even before the battery has actually failed. Looking at your report you can see that the full charge capacity currently is only 2/3 the designed capacity, so it is likely due for a replacement.
