Acer Nitro AN515-58 - second RAM slot not working

Hello,
I own AN515-58 which came with 8 GB DDR4 single 3200Mhz RAM, but it worked in single channel so it worked only in 1600 Mhz. Notebook had 1 slot free, so I wanted to expand it to 16 Gb.

I ordered additional 8gb RAM - the same as original - SK Hynix 8 Gb 1Rx16 PC4-3200A, HMAA1GS6CJR6N and mounted into second slot. It has the same parameters: 22-22-22-52-74 timings.

After mounting my notebook won't boot. I was careful to not cause any short circuits and RAM "clicked" after mounting. When I tried to boot it, my keyboard had red color but screen was black. Nothing happened when I was pressing F2 or any other key. I also checked the pins to see if they were intact and used air to lightly blow off any dust but it was clean before.

What is interesting, when I had unmount old RAM and mounted new RAM on original slot - it was working. And when I had mount old RAM to the second slot only it was not working again. Something was wrong with with that 2nd slot.

I switched RAM to old slot, entered BIOS and disabled "fast boot" (to allow for some kind of memory testings). In the end I decided to update BIOS - I had very old v1.03 version and upgraded it to latest v2.14 - still no success.

Do you know why does it may not work?

Just in case I attach photo of RAM and slots. It may not be clear visible, but pins are fine (all the same) and looks better or worse depending of angle of flashlight.

Thank you in advance

Note: that Nitro AN515-58 laptop Acer does not recommend that it be installed with 2x 8GB DDR-3200MT/s CL22 type ram into SLOTS 1 & 2 and that could be why your laptop doesn't work. As for 16GB Acer recommends only a 1x 16GB DDR4-3200MT/s CL22 type ram, as this laptop also comes with DDR5 which your laptop cant use and the mainboard could be of the same construction and for DDR4 there is a compromise that you can't use 2x 8GBDDR4 type ram.

Memory DDR4 population for the AN515-58 laptops slot 1 and 2:

Otherwise, it could also be a faulty ram slot, that its 260 pins of the ram slot are not making full contact with the mainboard and their solder has come lose, as sometimes that can happen and that is why the ram won't work or it could also be that the ram is not getting the 1.2V from the mainboards and its got a problem.

If the laptop doesn't work with 1x 16GB DDR4 module and you have checked all the pins and the ram still doesn't work, take your laptop to a technician and get them to pinpoint the problems that you have, as there are no settings that you can do that will fix a faulty ram mainboard slot issues, as these parts are all microscopic parts and its very hard to see and/or pinpoint the problem. Good luck and hope this helps t=you out.

Hello @StevenGen - thank you for reply and explanation. You actually surprised me with this compatibility table since I never met with such combinations before. I will try to check with 16Gb stick.

Looking on that table, to my mind even single RAM stick should work on second slot, so now I am a bit worried that something is wrong with that slot since laptop didn't turn on on it.

I might test if motherboard gives me 1.2V on certain pins (but might be challenge due to small size), but I am not sure whether the voltage is applied all the time to RAM sticks or whether it needs short circuit between two pins - like PS-ON pin on stationary 24-pin motherboards. Yeah… or taking to technician as you sugggested, but I suppose the easiest solution may be swapping motherboards instead investigating short circuits or dead solder joints.

By the way, may I ask where did you find that table? I was looking before for Qualified Vendor List (QVL) RAM list for that model documentation here:
    https://www.acer.com/us-en/support/product-support/Nitro_AN515-58/downloads
however I could not find anything useful.

Thank you again for explanation :)

I'm grad to help you out Atexor as much as I can and give you all the official Acer information on the AN515-58 laptop! As that is the only logical reason why the 2x 8GB DDR4-3200MT/s CL22 type ram does not work on your AN515-58 laptop, as on my AN515-56 2x 8GB DDR4-3200MT/s CL22 type ram work 100% and very well.

That table above is from the official Acer Nitro 5 AN515-58 service guide that Ace community ranked member only have access to and is not available to the public, so its 100% correct as its from Acer officially that I've passed onto you.

Note: In my opinion your Slot 2 ram has a problems with its pins or voltage and needs repairing as the laptop should boot with 1x 8GB DDR4-3200MT/s CL22 type ram in Slot 2 only. Good luck

    @Atexor

Use a soft brush and clean out the RAM slot. Make sure that the battery is disconnected before cleaning the slot. Also, try to wait for 1-2 minutes after installing RAM to that slot.

Please remember to include @AnhEZ28 when you want to reply back to my comment so that I can check your response.
Thank you and have a nice day!
