hello, I’ve had my Acer aspire 3 laptops for nearly a year now and I’ve never needed an Ethernet cable to help me connect to the WIFI. Yesterday I noticed that it won’t let me connect to the Wi-Fi unless I have one. Why do I suddenly need this cable?

Hi, you don't need a LAN cable, most laptops don't even have an Ethernet port anymore. if this happened recently restore your system to a date when Wi-Fi still worked, type restore in the Search bar and click on "Create a restore point" and "System Restore" and select a date:

  • Hello! Do you see any driver issues in Device Manager? Have you recently installed an antivirus?

hey. I’ve had a look and it says that there’s a problem with the intel sd host controller. When I go into it , it says ‘this device cannot start (code 10) the drive is not ready’. There’s also a problem with my network adapter

What is the exact model of your Acer Aspire 3 laptop model, it should be A315-xx or similar, its written on a sticker on the underside of your laptop. The intel sd host controller does not have anything to do with the operation and detection of the WLAN card. Mcafee antivirus should not have anything to do with the detection or a WLAN card also, a separate antivirus software only hinders the OS performance as its bloatware as windows has its own Windows Security that is all that you need for your OS, so be aware of that.

Step 1 - refresh the WLAN driver if its showing in Device Manager

Go to > Device Manager > Network adapters > select the whichever Wi-Fi Card your laptop has > right click the card Properties > Driver > Update Driver > Browse my computer for drivers > Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer > and then pick the latest Wi-Fi driver that is in that list, and reinstall that driver, as afterwards your Wi-Fi should work,

Step 2 - Reinstall the WLAN drive of your Aspire 3 completely if its not showing in Device Manager

Go to the Acer Support page of your Aspire 3 laptop and download the Wireless Lan driver and reinstall the driver again and see if the WLAN works. If the WLAN doesn't work, then its the actual Wi-Fi/BT card that is faulty and needs replacing.

It may be antivirus program related; you should uninstall that with the mcafee uninstaller that you can download from their site, using Windows Add or remove programs won't work. If System Restore did not fix it and you are sure you had Wi-Fi before with the same router/modem you can "Reset this PC" without losing your files option.

  • Have you tried restoring Windows by pressing Alt+F10 before the Acer logo?
