Aspire M5-581T trackpad freezes

This is my second aspire m5-581T because I returned the first product after a week for the same problem. I am using the trackpad, when all of a sudden for no particular reason, it freezes. The only way I can get it to work again, is by rebooting. If I attach an external mouse, I will have control of the cursor again. I thought maybe the laptop was heating up so I purchased a cooling pad, but the trackpad still freezes, so that is not the issue.

I don't know if it is a driver problem, thus rebooting resets things, or if it is a motherboard issue? Any ideas or solutions would be appreciated, because otherwise I have no issues with the laptop. With the trackpad freezing though, I end up losing a lot of work, because I can't even use keyboard shortcuts, I have to do the Ctrl-Alt-Del, then use arrows to reboot.

With the issue being intermittant and unpredictable, it sounds like it may be a hardware issue.

This would explain why it does not occur when an external mouse is connected and in control.

To make sure that I'm understanding:

You use the system for up to five minutes, when the touchpad "freezes".

You state that you are unable to use keyboard shortcuts but CTRL-ALT-DEL works and the arrow keys work.

What keyboard shortcuts are not working?

What applications have you installed on the system?

If you restore the system to factory defaults, does this occur?

Sorry, keyboard shortcuts do work. Factory restore did not work. All drivers are uptodate. I am running Windows 7.

If I plug in an external mouse, I am able to regain control of the mouse. Else the mouse moves around but it will not select anything when I click. Rebooting seems to reset everything.

Sometimes, I can work all day on the laptop before the touchpad fails, othertimes, it will fail 4 or 5 times in a day.
