My new Extensa 15 was purchased without an operating system. I have ready a memory stick with Win 10. I entered the bios to change the boot order but could not make any changes. The opening page after first switching on presented a column of text which was expecting an input from me but what?

[Edited the thread to add model name to the title]

Which Extensa 15 model do you have? Your full model number is usually on the same sticker as your serial number, it should look something like EXxxx-xxx-xxxx. In general you have to configure the BIOS to enable the F12 boot menu then use F12 key to enter that menu with the Windows install flash drive plugged into a USB port. The drive should show up in the menu.

"Billsey" I followed your suggestion but still cannot make changes to the bios.

The first display after switching on is titled Device mapping table.First row headed fs0,second blk0, third blk1, fourth blk2, fifth blk3, sixth blk4 sub headed Removable BlockDevice. followed by PciRoot(0x0)/Pci(0x15,0x0)/USB(0x0,0x0)

Press Esc in 1 seconds to skip startup.nsh, any other key to continue.

This is the only mention I can see of USB

An option in the Bios is to disable fast start up (don't know if that's at all relevant.

    Any ideas ?

That doesn't sound like you are into the BIOS. You enter the BIOS with the F2 key, try either holding it down as you power up or press it a bunch of times quickly as soon as the Acer logo shows. You should see something like this:

You need to go to the Main tab and enable the F12 Boot Menu.

"Bllsey" My very first action was to press F2 which presented the page I referred to, and was expecting an input from me. I switched off then started up pressing f12 which took me into the bios. In the bios I referred to the boot priority page where there was no facility to alter the pre existing entry which lists one entry "1. UEIF_SHELL to change option use up and down arrow. ESC to exit"

    ???

All is well with USB stick so that rules it out. Please do your best to fathom out this problem.

"Billsey" When startng up from cold I get the page that I described to you previously.

Restarting with the USB stick in place it made no difference when looking at the boot manager the presence of the Stick was not present. However, it did changiose the entries on the start up page. it now mentions the stick on various lines of text so at least that first page does recognise the stick if though the bios does not. ??

OK, the UEFI shell is the default boot environment when the BIOS menus aren't loaded, which is to be expected. If the boot menu is enabled in the BIOS though you should get a menu that lists both the USB drive and the UEFI shell as options. Take a picture of your screen for us.

I'm glad you said "Should" I have tried to take a photo of the UEFI shell page but a screen shot not possible without an op/sys. I tried using a digital camera but the results were unusable, too much glare from the backlight, from any angle. Only other method I can think of is to skype me and see if my web cam succeeds. Other wise I could copy it all by hand and post it up Ugh!

Typically a phone will get a good enough picture, but you might have to adjust the screen position if there's too much glare. Just leave the flash off…

At last I have a photo of UEIF page for your inspection. In order to provide more information

THis was taken before inserting the USB Stick. I will follow this up with the changes that occur after installing it.

So fs1 is the drive you wish to boot from. When startup.nsh runs, what does it ask?

"Billsey" HOORAY……….I had difficulty getting in to the bios via f2 or f12. It was only when I tried again with the usb stick in place that I got into bios but this time It RECOGNISED the USB stick. I was then able to move it to the top of the options, from there on it was plain sailing and the op'system was safely installed. THANK YOU "BILLSEY"

Do you have exactly the same model (EX215-31 from 2019)? If not, please start a new thread using the Ask a Question button. Include your full model number. Your full model number is usually on the same sticker as your serial number, it should look something like EXxxx-xxx-xxxx. Describe the issue and what you have tried so far and we'll get you through the process.
